2. So in the city I live in we have this one code enforcement officer who has it in for my house. This guy has nothing better to do apparently than to harass me every year. Well this time my boss is getting involved because he just proved he has gotten ridiculous.
It started right after Katrina, and he cited us because our grass hadn't been cut and a few other things...well it was after Katrina, and NO ONES grass was cut or whatever. My ex and I decided to let it go for public hearing and we appeared before the City Council. When they heard how my ex(was husband at the time) had been away in Iraq the whole time and that we had no access to a lawnmower, and then showed pics of other houses that were worse than ours, the code enforcement guy got called on the carpet publicly for even bringing a nuisance charge.
Ever since then he likes to come around every year and if he finds one blade of grass that is too tall or something he "thinks" doesn't meet the code, he sends a letter citing us and saying we'll be fined if we don't take care of it. Every year I have responded back with pictures showing either that the grass was cut (yes one year my mower died and he just happened to catch me before I could buy a new one) and how whatever else he cited was really wrong on his part and the pics to prove it.
Well yesterday I get home to a letter from him again...nope I wasn't surprised...I always look forward to seeing what he's going to try this time. Well this time he claims there is a new ordinance (there's not, my boss and I looked it up and it's been on the books the whole time) that you can't park in your own yard unless it's on a paved surface. He also cited excessive trash accumulated and grass was too high. The great thing about this is his own picture that he included of my property. Yes it shows the car on the yard right next to the driveway, but is shows my yard is clean cut and the only thing else in the picture is a child's outdoor toy!
This morning I drove around my neighborhood and took pictures of everyone who had a vehicle parked in their yard, some even had boats and motorhomes that have been there for years, and one with a wrecked truck that hasn't moved for a year taking up the whole front yard, and those who had grass that was over a foot tall. There were at least 15 other people with vehicles in their yard. The funny thing about it is since it's actually been on the books the whole time, all his previous citations of me should have included it, and I have pictures he took then showing a car in my yard, but not cited. The point here is that everyone parks in their yard so as not to take up the street, because the cops frown on that too, and have been doing it for years all throughout the city. In my case, my driveway will only hold 2 cars, and we have 4 people who drive at my house. And actually most of the time the only time a car is in the yard is at night and early in the morning.
My boss is going to use all of the previous letters from him and all the other info I've been gathering and we're going to take it to a public hearing again...except this time I'm going to have a lawyer who will make it very well known that if this harassment doesn't stop there will be a lawsuit filed against the city! I'm just tired of one little bureaucrat who got his knickers in a twist using his authority to harass people who are trying to live peacefully. I'm wondering how many others he's tried to do this to.
Ok, rant over...just been bugging me and had to get it off my chest...now back to your regularly scheduled tree posting!
