In honor of my two year vaping anniversary I purchased my first 5v mod, the GLV2 from Great Lakes Vapor. I've been a little over a pack-a-day smoker for over 30 years.
I bought my first PV very spur of the moment, seeing an article about them on a gadget web site. It was not the best choice, it turned out, but after I finished my last carton of cigs two years ago this month, I never looked back...
I had soon purchased the old classic pen-style 801s. I've also bought two stick type mods and one 3.7v mod. They all started great, but tended to die on me after a while. Given the newness of the technology and the entrepreneurial spirit of the makers I have no complaints about this despite some lifetime warranties.
This new-tech reality did contribute to my decision on the GLV2 rather than other mods. It just looked very solid, simple, and durable, and I enjoy the off-center atomizer aesthetics of it. It defaults to a 510 atomizer, but an adapter is included. I continue to use 801 (standard resistance) style atomizers, but I like that I now also have the option of trying the very popular 510 attys at no extra cost for another adapter.
It can take a while to get one of these. I waited about three weeks. Here are my impressions of the first 24-hours.
First, this sucker is big, especially with the 801 atomizer on it. It has an excellent fit and finish and is much more attractive in real life than in the photos. The metal end caps are a very clean, white silver color and the power-coated middle is a deep rich hue. I chose Blue Ice Explosion which is similar to a navy blue. It can almost appear black depending on the lighting. It is a metallic paint so there are sparkles within it that catch the light, giving it a depth and texture.
The three parts fit together cleanly and easily. This alone is great as my previous mod was developing severe problems with the threading as well as the switch. The adapter screws in and out cleanly and precisely. With the rounded button it really does suggest Star Trek's Enterprise. It seems very precision-made, solid and durable. The machining of it-- the fit of the parts-- seems very clean if that makes sense.
My goodness, this is a monster! My old mod was dying and I am in the habit of really holding the button down to get a good vape (I generally drip). My first efforts with the GLV2 were almost too much. Well, they WERE too much as I think I blew out two attys within minutes! I finally realized I only needed to briefly click the button-- not hold it down-- to get tons of smooth vapor. This makes the experience much more like a cigarette. (Previously I described vaping as being more like smoking a pipe with long, slow draws. This makes it quite different.) Adjusting to the button on the top, rather than the side is still a little weird, but I'm finding my comfort niche with it. It has been close to 24 hours and is still vaping up a storm without a change of batteries.
Y'know what would be a great accessory for this? A stand to hold it upright on the desk.
So, we'll see how it holds up over time, but so far a big thumbs up for the GLV2!
