Hi guys hope everyone is having a great Friday! So im going to attempt to wick the TF-R1 that came with my smok TFV4 this evening. Couple questions, this coil comes with the wire already twisted and in place all i have to do is install the cotton. Keep in mind this is my first time messing around with a rba head. The wire that is on it does not go bad correct? Its only the cotton that i will need to replace when it goes bad? Also there was no wattage recommendation on this rba head any suggstions? I believe its a .8? What wattage do you recommend i run it at? any other tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also someone had mentioned not to fill my tank up the first time? Is this cause it may leak or just in case something goes bad with the build i can easily get back in the tank?

Thanks!

Eventually all wire needs to be replaced. Though you can rewick & dry burn many, many times before the wire needs to be replaced.
Its only the cotton that i will need to replace when it goes bad?
When your cotton & wire gets all "gunked up" with carmelized juice,
  • pull out the cotton
  • "dry burn" the coil (if it's not nickel or titanium)
  • install new cotton
I believe its a .8? What wattage do you recommend i run it at?
The rule of thumb for EVERY vape device you'll ever own is the same (when running in power or wattage/voltage mode). Turn your voltage/wattage down, take a few hits, bump it up, couple more hits. Repeat until you find your "sweet spot". If it starts to taste funny, gets too hot or tastes burnt, back it down. Different flavors will have different sweet spots so you just have to experiment.
Also someone had mentioned not to fill my tank up the first time? Is this cause it may leak or just in case something goes bad with the build i can easily get back in the tank?
Wicking is often the hardest part to get right. It's much easier to get to your coil if you don't have to remove all the juice in your tank. Though having a syringe around can make this much easier (and faster)if you have to do this.

@Susan~S thanks for the reply :) so obviously when you get dry hits it's the cotton that needs to be replaced correct? How do you know when you need to replace the wire? Dry burn the coil as in fire it up with no cotton and let it get red hot? I believe the coil is .8 tf-r1 that came in the kit. I know you mention to slowly increase the wattage but there must be a wattage range as well no? Thanks again :)

If you are getting dry hits then either your wattage is too high or you are not wicking it correctly. Go out and view a few youtube reviews on wicking the RBA base you have.
How do you know when you need to replace the wire?
I generally recoil when the coil starts to look old and ashen in color or when I want a different resistance or type of coil. Others (who love to rebuild) do it on a weekly basis.

Not that I know of. You can have three different 0.8Ω coils (different gauges, twisted wire, clapton wire) and they all behave differently.

Lol, jumping right the *#@ in with both feet, are we? :D

I bought an RDA first, (Twisted Messes 2 clone), and I found building on it to be fairly easy; I made me some decent 0.3 ohm claptons from a Geek Vape spool, without proper tools. Building on the one you bought will be a little more fiddly as RTA decks are generally smaller, and it must wick properly from the tank.

Start with this for basics of building:

Here's something more specific to the TFV4:

GL and have fun! :vapor:

Haha @7sixtwo yup sure am! Been vaping now for 8 weeks the building coil is intriguing. And since the tfv4 came with an RBA head with the wire already on it why not! I was reading online they recommended this device that tells you what ohm your coil is but I have cuboid which tells you what your coil is. I'm just a bit confused (don't have to worry about this now with this coil but in the future) different wires give u different power, the gauge thickness of the wire you need how is all that determined? Any info or links would be great. Will definitely watch these videos thanks man!!

Watch the first vid I posted. Nick, (Grimmgreen), goes over the basics of how resistance relates to the gauge of wire used, diameter of the coil, and number of wraps.

It's all pretty simple, actually. I should've started building years ago. :)

Common Rebuilding Tools

Wicking Material - Take your pick
  • Organic Cotton Balls
  • Rayon (Cellu-Cotton) - Sally's Beauty Supply
  • Japanese Cotton Pads (Koh Gen Do/Shiseido) - Sephora/Nordstroms - I use these.
Other Tools
  • Ohm Reader
  • Coiling Jig (not necessary BUT very handy)
  • Accessory Screwdriver Set (can be used to wind coils and tighten post screws).
  • Ceramic Tweezers (not needed but nice) or Tweezers
  • Needle Nose Pliers (to squeeze the coils together nice and tight)
  • Wire clippers and/or Nail Clippers (to clip the ends of wires)
  • Scissors (to cut cotton)
If you wanted to purchase all of these "other tools" in a kit, check out Coil Master.

@Susan~S @7sixtwo well there she is!! I'm not sure if I have enough cotton? Also do you see that black line in the middle of the coil? Is that normal? Getting great flavor no leaks had it between 35-40 watts was fine. No burnt hits. A few hits I felt some crackling in the airflow and it seems a bit restricted maybe because I had the quad on there before? I opened it up and made push a bit of cotton away from the center hole in the middle of the deck. Thanks for are your help guys!

If it's wicking, but not flooding, you've got enough cotton. It looks fine. Glad to hear you're enjoying it. :toast:

I would assume that black line is the hottest part of the coil beginning to "gunk" up. In other words its firing nicely from the middle. That vacuum sound you hear might be the coil cooling down and juice boiling and eventually burning onto the coil. I'm sitting here listening to my TFV4 after I take a vape and its my coil ramping down (.5ohm clapton) and juice bubbling if I don't take a second or two non powered puff after my vape to cool the coil down some. If I take the non powered puff I hear no after vape bubbling, my coils even though I DIY non sweetened tobacco juices last for at least a couple weeks before pooping out and the coil I'm listening to is the stock clapton my TFV4 RBA came with last October and still going.
As for filling my TFV4 when you turn the top piece and look at the U shaped hole there probably be a film inside it. I found that if you don't remove that film covering the opening you create a pressure lock when filling thus forcing juice out the bottom airflow. My TFV did randomly leak when I was filling but once I physically began to remove that film it hasn't leaked at all when I fill it.

Thanks :) haven't had any issues with it leaking either :)
