Some of you may know that much of the butter flavoring used in foods is Diacetyl, which is very bad especially in vapor form (Google it, cross referenced w/microwave popcorn industry). I had gotten some Wilton's Clear Butter Flavoring which smells and tastes just like buttered popcorn, without the salt. It also mixes well with many other flavors. I used it a few times before I found out about the Diacetyl issue. Many companies that make butter flavor will just list it as "flavoring" on their products. Anyway, after hearing this I e-mailed Wilton and told them what I was using it for and why I would be concerned about it being in their butter flavoring. Well, I got word back today and it does not contain Diacetyl!

So, anyone looking for a smooth, buttery flavor that smells just like popcorn, Wilton Clear Butter Flavor is A-OK!

This thread has become the place to check if your flavorings have diacetyl so I'll post the findings so far:

Wilton - None
McCormick - None
LorAnn - None
Flavourart - Some, check shop site or below for flavors that contain it and percentages
Capella - None
Bickford - Unconfirmed, no comment (if anyone can confirm, please post)
Johnson Creek juices - None

Not Diacetyle. Good, bronchiolitis obliterans is almost a bad as lung cancer.

Does that mean it's Acetoin or Ethyl Lactate? ;)

I have my doubts about Acetoin, because it's so similar to Diacetyl. Sometimes a one atom difference makes a chemical just slightly different, while at other times it can turn a vital nutrient into a deadly poison.

EDIT: ---

Actually I've been doing a lot of research on alternatives juice bases .Diacetyl was obviously rejected (like many others) but it does give a good example of some of the possible dangers of vaping. Diacetyl (along with Acetoin) are loaded into margarine and perfectly safe to eat in large quantities, but very dangerous when vaped. Protecting us from stuff like that is what the FDA SHOULD be doing, instead of trying to totally ban e-cigs.

Well, as I said, I told them what I'd be using it for and why I would be concerned about the vaporization. They did not come back with anything like, "no diacetyl, but it does have acetoin which could be bad in vapor form", so I'd say it's probably all good. Feel free to e-mail them about that though. I'm pretty satisfied. If there were an issue with vaporization of the ingredients they used, I'm pretty sure we'd have heard of those the same way you've heard about the diacetyl issues, and they would've mentioned it when they wrote back. They did not say what they used instead, however, so you might want to look into it and if there are any concerns about it. Don't forget, sometimes slightly different in chemical make up can be a HUGE difference as well.

It has been confirmed to me that Lorann, Wilton, and McCormick do not use Diacetyl in their flavorings. But Bickfords would never commit. Johnson Creek has also confirmed this too me by phone.

Sun

Thanks. I'll probably avoid Bickfords then, until I hear otherwise. Any word on Capella?

Applejack------Cappella refused to comment---that tells me either they use it in some of their flavors or just do not know what to say. If a comapny is not upfont, I do not go near it, but that is must me personally.

Thanks for the info. I'll stick to the confirmed 3 unless there's new news from the others.

Bummer. Capella has some nice looking flavors I wanted to try.

How 'bout Flavourart? Any word there? If not, I'll e-mail them. They've got some really interesting flavors.

Applejack--That is one I never checked out. Shoot them an e-mail and you may get a response. I had to clear all my by phone. Falvoruart first came on board here a long while back, but I never heard if anyone cleared them. I did not so you may want to check them out.

From my reading i believe it is an affirmative. They do not specifically say yes or no.

Sorry yes they do:

As example, butter flavor dosed at 0,3% in E juice. The amount of diacetyl in 100 ml of E.juice is 0,0045 grams. Assuming that a typical E cigarette contains an average of 2 ml of E juice, the amount of diacetyl assumed in a smoking session is...... 0,00009 grams or 0,09 ppm (part per million).

Always consider the dosage in use !

Vapor --- if they will not commit then it is a no go for me.

So this should clear the fact that diacetyl is normally consumed when people eat butter, drink beer or wine, eat a fruit and its moderate consumption is harmless. However we realize that for E smokers, our food flavors are used in a different way as they are not ingested but inhaled, and the presence of diacetyl can be a cause of concern.

So we are pleased to inform our customers, which flavours contain diacetyl and related amount in %. Just consider that the amount shown is related to 100% flavor, so when used in finished product its content is less.

Hey guys!

Not sure who at Capella refused to comment. I spoke to the owner, Tom, at Capella moments ago and he reaffirmed (he had informed me long ago) that NONE of their flavours contain any diacetyl. Their site will be updated tomorrow to reassure all vapers.

All the best and Happy Vaping!

Jack --nice you got a straight answer--when I tired it was a while back and got the 'NO COMMENT"---Probably afraid and had not heard of it at that point in time.

Very glad I got a straight answer, too! I was VERY clear before I decided to carry their products that they were for inhalation and that oils, sugars, artificial colours and diacetyl were definitely out of the question. He didn't need any time to look into it at the time. Possibly, shortly after you asked, he looked into it but never got back to you...

Your post had me worried. I feel much better now.

Thanks!
Jack
