Interesting. I made an assumption you were talking about traditional ambrosia, an alcoholic drink made from honey (the nectar of the gods of Olympus). I didn't know you were talking about Alton Brown's dessert.
Ambrosia salad is an old southern dish, not an AB invention entirely. Though up here we just call it fruit salad. Chopped up fruit with whipped cream. I usually make it with vanilla flavored greek yogurt though.

Fruit salad to me is fruit salad, with or without whipped cream. I don't think I'd even want marshymellers or coconut in my fruit salad, so I will continue to think of Ambrosia as booze made from honey (the drink/food of the gods).
