At least that's what I'm discovering in my short time trying to get the hang of these things.

Just got all my goodies about a week ago, (901's, juice, usb passthrough, etc...) and I've been frustrated at times with inconsistent hits, particularly with my passthrough for some reason. One hit will give me as much vapor as I ever got from an analog, and the next hit, nothing. I assumed it was because the atty dries out.

File this under the "Duh" category I guess, but an idea came to me yesterday, and so far it seems to be working great. I don't want to have to constantly drip on the atty in order to get a good hit, so what I've started doing, is filling the cart with a little more liquid than normal, attach it to the atty and battery/passthrough. Then I sit it up vertically with the cart side down so it isn't drowning the atty and leaking into the battery. For my usb, I just keep a shot glass next to my computer and rest it in that, cart side down. Then when I want a hit, I pick it up, turn it the other way, cart side up, for 20 or 30 seconds before I hit it.

If you go too overboard with juice, or don't wait long enough before hitting, you get it in your mouth, or flood the atty and battery, so just a few drops more than normal. Once you get the hang of it though, great hits every time.

I've read hundreds of threads here, and watched dozens of the videos and never seen this mentioned, so I just thought I would share what is making my vaping much more enjoyable. Of course this might end up killing attys or something.

There is an art to it, of sorts, but I know what you mean about gravity. If I have a freshly topped cart, I vape at a slight upward angle until the initial saturation is gone. I also place it down at a slight angle, cart lower. As the cart empties a bit, I will reverse this, vaping at a downward angle and resting it on whatever surface with the cart end a bit higher so the juice wicks to the top. Works for me, anyway.

Edit: Oh...very important...I nave a 510 with a manual switch, which means the battery is sealed off from the atomizer. If you have an automatic battery you should never store it with the cart end higher up. Juice can run through the atomixer into the battery and, if not ruin it completely, mess up the automatic switch.
