I'm working through some designs and I'm trying to decide if I can geta way with using hardwood as a tank cap. I know theres a lot of "acrylic stabilize" woods out there and a variety of finishes you can put on stuff to make it 'food safe' etc. But is it just totally not worth the effort to try to make a tank cap out of hardwood?

I'm good with material properties when it comes to things like plastics, metals, and even leather... dunno enough about wood to make a guess.

The issue is I want to make part of my built in rba out of the same wood I'm making the mod out of but I'm thinking it's dangerous. It wouldn't be exposed to much heat, the wick will go through it but hte coil won't really be that close.

Opinions? facts? Wild, baseless speculation?

What I have seen people using is wood veneers as a wrap for their atomizer and tanks it seems that would be safer than a all wood tank and it seems that there are many different wood types . I haven't tried it yet so don't know how hard it is to stick them on with no bubbles and minimum seam showing. I think its time I got some and tried it out.

Well im a woodworker and id say it wood be totally possible. Think about wood cutting boards, tons of them out there. There are multiple types of water resistant wood.Teak is just one.I would think if you used a good butcher block finish or a wood turners finish for bowls it would be safe.Even a good coat of paraffin burned into the wood might work.Testing is key as reaction between your finish and nicotine and pg/vg is certainly possible. One thing to consider though is that if you do not finish the wood properly it could taint the flavor of your juice. Also many woods have nasty chemicals in them that I would not want in my juice such as the tannins in oak.Maple would probably be ok,mahogany, cherry. Hope this helps you in your endeavor. Happy Vaping:)

You can make your own stabilized wood.

Take plexiglass/acrylic shards and place them in a glass container of acetone. Wait til it dissolves then place any wood in the mixture and let it soak in for a while. When you take it out and the acetone evaporates, the wood will have it's fibers saturated with plexiglass, the same stuff we've been using in tanks for years.

It will penetrate deeper if you can create some vacuum in the jar and keep the mixture warm (nothing crazy, a work light pointed at the jar works). Minwax also has a wood hardener that is essentially the same thing but may contain other chemicals so I wouldn't use it. I've done this for years and it works well.
