I was reading about how some eliquids can crack the tank. I asked someone who works at the local vape shop, and he mentioned how certain flavors can crack the tanks, sometimes it's because they haven't been steeped long enough. He mentioned he's heard complaints about banana flavors doing this.
Anyone have any experience with a tank cracking or breaking?

I actually was wondering this myself, if it even really happened all that often. Then i had 3 crack on me last week. So the answer is yes it does happen. For me it was really citrus-y juices like sour apple, orange and cinnamon flavors. I've heard black licorice is the worst, but that stuff tastes like vomit and i won't have it anywhere near me or my equipment lol

The kayfun that I bought came with a polycarbonate tank section. I had some liquorice e-liquid from bakervapor.
after about 5 - 10 min it started to get a weird taste. The liquid had cracked/melted the PC tank section around the threading, and the rest of the tank was moldable.
It took me 30min to get the threaded section of the tank unscrewed from the rest of the kayfun.

Klynnn, thank you for the link. Have you ever had a tank crack?

When I mentioned to the guy at the local vape shop that I had ordered a banana flavored eliquid, he said I should steep it for a couple weeks because it's a flavor known for cracking tanks.
I'm not sure why steeping it would make it less of a risk, maybe the tank cracking/melting components evaporate?

If anyone has any additional information, I'd gladly read up on it

I forgot the chemical name, but certain e-liquids contain it and it cracks or melts virtually all plastics!

Citrus flavors

Any Cola', Root Beers, Cinnamon, Red Hots....quite a list!

I am honestly surprised ANYONE makes tanks out of any plastics, but hey with many like my Kayfuns there are glass or SS options that work great.

I used cola in a Evod tip, melted it before it was empty!

I didn't read all of this blog, but beware...

It mentions polycarbonate tanks, and silicone seals...

Some liquids will eat or crack polycarbonate, and will definitely eat silicone seals!

I know first hand on the seals, as with my Kanger AeroTank Mega'...on my third set of seals in about a year, not too bad, but sill they actually melt!

Bad part is that as of now Kanger does not supply the lip seals for these tanks!

They are not conventional "O" rings....

I am going to try and see if I can use standard (well metric), standard type "O" rings, as nitrlie "O" rings will outlast the tank!

I don't believe steeping has anything to do with whether or not a juice will crack a tank.

This is probably a silly question, but what a "steep" mean?

Thanks,

Dani,

"Steeping" has to do with letting a juice sit, especially if it's been freshly-made. Think of tea in hot water - you have to let it "steep" to get the flavor out. With regards to ejuice, I take it more as "let the flavors meld together" (again, cooking/food analogy - like a good chili or pasta sauce, it may taste pretty good when it's first made, but give it some time, and the flavors blend together and it becomes even more awesome :) )

There are many who swear by steeping. I do make my own juices now, and I'm often impatient and must immediately get into what I've made. However, I've found flavor notes settle down if given some time. I'd made a peach/blueberry/raspberry cobbler type of juice the other day. The peach was super strong the first day I vaped it. However, about a week later, the peach has toned down, and I can taste some of the other elements as a whole.

So, I don't "intentionally" steep my juices - it just happens because I can't vape 30-40 mL immediately, each time I make flavors :)

Stick with pyrex tanks, problem solved.

Steeping simply means allowing time for the ingredients to fuse together for, enhanced taste. There are many methods used for steeping, the most basic being let it sit in a cool, dark place for a couple days to a month. It's a personal preference and some liquids with more complex flavoring can take longer to steep than.

I vape 18mg 50/50 juice. My favorite juice has a strong peppery taste (the nicotine) when new. I let the juice sit in a closet for a week and once every day or 2, I remove the cap, swirl it around a bit, put the cap back on tightly and shake vigorously. After about a week the peppery taste is gone and the fruit flavor is stronger. That's how I steep and there are many other methods out there.

I used to have plastic tanks turn cloudy when I used citrus (mostly lemon and lime) or cinnamon. One day I put a grapefruit juice I had mixed myself at a very high percentage of flavoring (15%) and it IMMEDIATELY fell completely apart. I went straight to my local b&m and bought a couple of mini PT3's for my citrus flavors and later ordered some full-size PY3's. It can and does happen. Now I reserve my plastic tanks for tobacco and fruit flavors.

After I used my first pyrex tank atomizer I gave up on plastic for good. All I taste is the plastic in the juice now. There are some real good inexpensive glass tanks to be had. Check out the Aspire K1. Got that for my wife to use on a Kanger VV and it performs almost as good as my Nautilus and MVP 2 combo. The K1 is under 10 bucks from World of Vapes.

I think the guy at the vape shop is somewhat misinformed. I do not think that steeping has anything to do with tanks cracking.

I have Kanger Evod tanks almost a year with no bad seals or cracks (pretty much a daily use) but my sister has cracked 4 in just 2 weeks. What I think the problem is over heating. Vaping or drawing to many times at once until it gets hot and the liquid base breaks down the plastic. I've used all the types of flavors listed with no problems. When I feel it starting to get warm I set it down and pick up a cooler one. I've always done that. I do see some hair line cracks with no leaks or breaks in some of my older tanks so I do see the issue starting. I've since switched to the glass and/or metal tanks. Of course the RDA's and RTA's have now put my other tanks in retirement or not used much. I do like my Aerotanks and I-Clear X.1 and B. I go out the door with the skinnies (Evod or Aerotank mini)

only once. After cracking one, a primary criteria of mine, for an rba, is that it must come with and all SS tank option.

Steeping has noting to do with cracking of plastic type tanks, it's generally the acidic type juices, citric, soda pop, cinnamon type flavors that do the damage.

Suppose if one left their juice open to the air, where it oxidized enough, neutralizing the acid balance of the juice, then yeah, if you call that "seeping" then that may help prevent forest fires, or something like that.

All I know, since going to full metal jacket tank system, haven't cracked or broken a tank since, well there was that one glass tank, was just seeing what the fascination of having to see one's juice was all about, still can't see it!, but big Buddha on the copper mutant fell over, go boom and crack go the glasss. all good, came with SS tank too. :D
