Has anyone tried building a coil like this?

This was just a prototype (obviously) but I have a lot 1mm silica and a myriad of kanthal and nichrome in my stash. Anyway, I tried a staggered weave, opposing top over bottom over top, with the thread. I think that if I use some vice grips to hold it in place, I can use some nichrome 60 and get a nice tight wrap on it.

With the thread and yarn it worked nicely, when I pulled it tight everything came together nicely into something that resembled a twisted braid.

Let me know what you guys think and I'll let you know if I have any luck!

That's like a gazillion wraps - what kind of resistance would you be hoping to hit?
Seems like more wick contact, which seems like a good idea - NO idea if the effort will pay off in vapor, though!

I didn't actually do it, wanted to see what people thought before I wasted the time and effort on it. For the wick I plan on using 1mm silica and for the wire nichrome 60. Thoughts and comments are welcome!

I've thought of something like this too. My only concern was getting hot legs in between the silica strands. You would have to make sure they are bunched up together nicely.

If you pull it too tight it's going to choke off and burn, if you use that much wire your prolly going to be pretty high ohm wise. Dual Coils will half your net ohms 3 coils all on one wire (2 leads) is just one big coil = high ohms.

When you wrap a micro coil, with cotton, you want the cotton to fit right not too tight, or loose, you want to be able to re wick without removing coils. If you pull that tight your never going to be able to re wick it either.
