I started this as a reply to one of the many threads that pop up like weeds in my garden around here... But then decided this may be worthy of it's own thread. This is kind of a rant but then again... why are we, as vapers, so consumed and focused on the minutia and details related to this realm?

I just find it amazing the depth of things people and now myself consider, inquire and/or worry about within the realm of vaping but gave little to no thought about any of the components and thousands of toxic chemicals within a burning cigarette that you fired up 20 times a day or more without as much as a brain cycle or two thought about it...

For example:

Copper or brass toxicity... when I smoked I never gave any thought or found a correlation to the plumbing in my house... now I'm informed and worried about it!!!

Silica -vs- cotton -vs- organic cotton -vs- hemp -vs- eco-wool -vs- stainless steel mesh... when I smoked I never considered the content of the filter and the micro-fibers I was inhaling but today I'm concerned if I'm not boiling my organic cotton balls in distilled water enough and worried I may be breathing in-organic cotton fibers from my worn out Van Halen T-shirt...

Kanthal -vs- Nichrome... we're reading studies on micro-particles of metallic substances emitted when the coils in our sub-ohm atomizers are heated at 2 amps above the safe operating capacity of a Li-on battery that we never knew existed a year ago... when I smoked I never looked at my cell phone or laptop as a bomb just waiting to explode and burn my house down...

Authentic -vs- Clone... When I smoked I never felt I was supporting cheap Chinese counterfeit sweat-shops when I walked into the AutoZone across the street from the Chevy dealership for a part for my truck...

I don't know... making a healthy choice to vape rather than smoke was a good thing for my physical health. Although once I dove into this bottomless pool I'm not so sure all this new knowledge of harm reduction is such a good thing for my mental health...

Life seemed much simpler with my toes in the sand and a drink and Marlboro in my hand...

I am new to this "world" of vaping. I must say I am consumed w/ research, questions & so on. I can't get enough, it doesn't end! It really is like a bottomless pool. I love it though & you made some great points! Interesting how our brains start to look at things different all cuz we started into this world of vaping! :toast:

Not much has changed for me. I still worry about the same things I worried about before smoking, but many of those things weren't for my own health. More for my kids. Things like, what's in the water that comes out of the tap, how is the additional traffic in the town we live in affecting their health as opposed to our former town, etc...

Didn't have all the options with smoking.

Sure, I'd have loved a cigar, but couldn't afford that.

Sure I'd prefer a cigarette filled with real rich tobacco instead of the more common stuff that smelled like it only had maybe 5%-10% tobacco and the rest was probably just grass.

But with vaping, you get to build your own!!
You can make your own mix!

Copper or brass toxicity - I don't worry about it, my mods are stainless because other metals are too soft and the threading won't last (an economic decision!).

Silica -vs- cotton -vs- organic cotton -vs- hemp -vs- eco-wool -vs- stainless steel mesh -- this is about the taste of the vape, and I have found that organic cotton tastes best, but I don't boil it, for exactly the reason you said -- after 39 years of sucking down tar, I'm pretty sure I can handle organic cotton.

Kanthal -vs- Nichrome - for me, this is about nausea -- I've heard that nichrome can cause nausea, which to me is a fate worse than death, so I use kanthal only.

Authentic -vs- Clone - always a clone for me, I'm not rich and haven't won the lottery, and I don't give a rat's patootie where it was made; if it gets the job done and I can afford it, it's fine with me.

You're right of course; cigarettes were easy -- a really easy way to set yourself up to die too young from a horrible disease. We all have to die of something, but I'd really far prefer old age in my own bed, than lung cancer in the ICU attached to a respirator.

Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things. :D

I disagree with the fact that just because I smoked cigarettes I shouldn't care about what I am vaping. In fact, this is one of my pet peeves.

I like the people who worry about second hand smoke and vaping then sit in traffic for hours with exhaust pipes pointing at the car windows pumping carbon monoxide into their face by the metric ton, no worries there.

Especially since car exhaust makes cigarette smoke smell like a spring garden! :D

I'm with you on this one. Just because we've kicked one very unhealthy habit doesn't mean we should stop applying at least some thought to further health hazard reduction.

Worry? Angst? No need for that. Giving it some thought? Why not?

While I am convinced inhaling vaporized PG/VG and nicotine is a lot less unhealthy than smoking cigarettes, I am not convinced that any way you go about it, or any additive in your e-liquid, is necessarily completely without relative risk. I may very well be silly for doing so, but I much prefer knowing my e-liquids are mostly stored in glass bottles, and vaporized in food grade / surgical grade stainless steel / pyrex atties. If nothing else, it gives me peace of mind. Angst reduction --> health improvement. That's as good a reason as any, imho.

How can you not appreciate the research into what additives in e-liquid may not be good for us? Would you not like to see a definite study on which wicking materials may or may not give off nasties? Or get some data on whether or not brass/copper atties really are good/bad for you? Or whether or not we inhale bisphenols from polycarbonate plastics in certain atties?

I personally worry a little about Diacetyl and Bisphenol. My solution is to vape liquids without Diacetyl, and avoid atties made of polycarbonate. Am I right? No idea! But it gives me peace of mind to not use those while waiting for definite answers.

Oh I didn't mean to imply that anyone shouldn't care about what we're ingesting or doing to ourselves. That's a wonderful benefit of this new phenomenon and something I encourage others to do!!

I was just highlighting how replacing one habit with another has blossomed into so many other non-related aspects of life in general.

In the past when I quit drinking Scotch and shifted to beer or switched from Camels to Marlboros... I didn't spend hours upon hours on-line doing product research. When I smoked I didn't find and participate in a dozen social groups on Facebook for Central Arkansas Marlboro Smokers or Vintage Zippo lighter users or Marlboro Ultra-Lite Forums.

My point is... there's more to this whole vaping business than just replacing a bad habit. It's sorta interesting and amazing when you look at the dynamics in such a short life span of this whole deal.

I've never been overly concerned about the effects of the vape itself, but I must confess to currently being on the "OMG, my battery's gonna blow" train. I enjoyed vaping much more when I was oblivious to the battery dangers....LOL Now, I find myself hypersensitive to any perceived changes in battery temp. It's amazing what you can convince yourself of.
