My experience with mesh said the ones that worked well had a little “pusher” on a spring that held the cotton to the mesh. You can DIY mesh by cutting little rectangles of fine 316L screen to the appropriate size.

I heard bad bad things about silica wicks and silicosis. Crap?
IMO, fear, uncertainty, and doubt; FUD
The first decade of this industry was ruled by the silica wick.
Anecdotally, many of us/them are still on this side of the dirt.

My memory is silicosis worry was what drove people to cotton. That and overheating other things. A cotton wick more or less shoots a lot of “studies” in the face.
A hi capacity disposable would pretty much have to use one. Have to break one to find out. It would be pretty cut and dry though. Silicosis is hard to confuse with anything else under a microscope.
