Hello from Seattle (and looking for suggestions)

Just joined these forums, after reading a few reviews and other threads here that I found helpful.

My wife and I are extremely new to ecigs, having really just tried a few this past weekend. We want to stop our regular smoking habit, so hence the digging around to try to find the best solution for us in here. ;)

Anyway, my wife has smoked about 30 years, and about 15 for myself. She smokes a little heavier than I do, but we're both around the 3/4 to 1 pack a day range, and smoke American Spirits. Why does that matter? Because we're looking to find the best "replacement" for that we can, at least initially. Our "wish list" would be:

1. Same size (or extremely close) as a traditional cigarette.
2. Tastes like tobacco. Not pina coladas, not javamocharasberrrytangowhatever. Tobacco.
3. Vapor production that "feels" close to regular smoking. A little lighter is ok, as long as there is sufficient throat hit and taste.

So far, here's what we've tried and our thoughts.

* V2 disposable. Too damn big, slick, didn't feel good in the hand. Taste was kinda too saccharine-sweet. We were actually surprised, though, at the general vaping experience, and since this was our first shot, we figured, "ok, maybe we can make this switch. If we can just find something that doesn't taste like bubblegum."

* BLK. About the same size (a little longer, actually, but slightly thinner) as the V2. I don't mind this one too much, as it has a taste similar to some mild cigarillos I used to smoke, but I find it too heavy for "daily" smoking. Didn't seem too bad for the "after dinner cigar" kind of thing. This tells me I'd probably be ok eventually switching to one of the larger cigalike rechargables, like maybe a Halo G6 (I've read pretty good reviews about them, especially their juice).

* NJOY. Ok, have to admit, first hits on this thing were very, very close to what we'd like. The size and feel of the thing is spot on (a touch heavier, but not too much so), as it feels like a "normal" cigarette in the hand. The texture of the cig was also pleasant; not slick like the V2 was. The hit at first was pretty decent--tasted much better than the V2 we thought. It kinda tasted like we were smoking a cheap cigarette (like the kind often on sale at mini marts for really cheap prices), but it tasted like a cigarette. However, after a few draws we noticed we were coughing fairly hard, and just didn't have a good taste anymore. I saw that they don't list their ingredients, unlike many others, and this worries me more. Also, I know it's not a long term solution by any means, due to price and general reviews.

* Rejuve disposable. Wandered into a Vape shop we came across, and sadly the only cigalike they had was this (though he had tons of juice, and much larger devices). It's the same size as the NJOY, which is a big plus. It's a little slick/plasticky, but I think that isn't too much a block. Taste is kinda "meh," as it doesn't have much throat hit at all, but it's not too sweet, at least.

Anyway, there we are, and I have now exhausted my entire knowledge base on ecigs. ;)

Welcome. I would recommend trying to find a local vape shop in your area and talk to them about what you discussed here. That way you can look at whats out there and actually hold it in your hands etc. They should also have samples that you can try and see exactly what you want and don't want to Vape. The starter kit for me was an Joyetech e-go battery. It is a little bigger then you have described but its very popular for starters. you can also get a lanyard for them and hang it around your neck which was awesome for me when I first quit. but??? everything is subjective. GOOD LUCK!!! and VAPE ON!!!

If you want something that looks and feels like a real cigarette, I would recommend Green smoke e cigs. They are good quality, and will perform nicely. They are a bit longer and heavier than the njoys, but still look like cigarettes. They have a wide variety of flavors online, including regular tobacco, that does taste relatively close to a cigarette. I would recommend buying a starter kit rather than disposables as this will save you money. and you can buy the cartridges in bulk (if you want to) on their website. Good luck switching!

Welcome to the boards, Valander! So glad that you and your wife have decided to make the switch!! Congrats on that!!!

Check out the eRoll eRoll
It's small and portable, and with the PCC (Portable Charging Case) You'll be able to recharge your spare battery on the go. You can use any juice you like... some of the Johnson's Creek tobacco juices are good, but honestly there are so many out there that the only suggestion I can make on juice is to get sample size bottles from every vendor you can find until you find "The One"...
Once you get started, you can always come here if you have any problems... I can guarantee that someone on here has used the device you are using and has had the same problems! Good luck in your search!

*edit* Apparently great minds think alike, but Susan is just faster than I am!!

I started on the V2 disposables and they were lacking in flavor and throat hit and vapor. This was 3 years ago and I went back to Marlboros pretty quickly. Three weeks ago I discovered our local vape shop and walked out with a kit of Kanger Evod's, which is the price of a carton of smokes. Very satisfying and got me off the smokes in one day. About the size of a cigar and heavier but they broke the habit of having a smoke dangle from my lips and the flicking of the ash which was a big part of enjoyable smoking for me. I started with a tobacco flavor and have branched out and am enjoying them all.

Welcome aboard, Valander.

First thing, vaping is NOT smoking, and finding something that taste "just like a cig" may not be possible. There are flavors that will approximate it, and the best way to find them is in a local B&M where you can sample the wares.

The cigalike sizes are noted for being under-performing, and moving to the cigar sizes mentioned would be a good step towards making the switch. But if you want to stay with that form factor (for now), you might want to track down some Vivi Nano clearomizers or similar. While not rebuildable, they're easier to refill than cartos and can work well on the small, fixed voltage batteries.

Using cartos or the Nano, you can fill with whatever flavor you want. And whatever nic strength as well, so you can "tune" that to your preferences.

Switching can be a process, and finding the gear and mix that you like can take some time. But well worth it!

Thanks for the replies, all. For the record, I recognize that there's not going to be a 100% "this is exactly like a cigarette" ecig, but we'd like something as close as possible, at least initially. ;) The biggest part is the feel of the thing in the hand (especially for my wife, with 30 years of smoking). If it feels too "off," it won't satisfy the digital/oral addiction. We certainly felt we got the nic hit from what we've tried thus far, but the in-hand feel has been off, for everything other than the NJOY (which had other issues).

I'll definitely look at those eRolls, though. I've also heard that the Halo Torque56 e-juice is a pretty good tasting juice that's "similar" to American Spirits. Just wish we had somewhere local that carried that, so I didn't have to wait for shipping and all that.

Checked out a couple review videos of the eRoll, and that doesn't look bad. I think it might be too "fiddly" for my wife to deal with, but I would probably not be too hassled by it.

Also came across Starfire, which look like they might be analog size and at least have the PCC, which I think is probably something that is a requirement if we go with the smaller size. Still looking around, and will update with any other findings. I'm sure we're not the only ones that have ever tried to switch from burning sticks to vaping, so maybe our journey's notes can help others in that process, too.

On lunch break, I wandered down to a smoke shop near the office that said they had some ecigs and so on, only to find they really had less than the gas station by my house (lol). Anyway, I did see a Mark Ten there, which at 9 bucks for a rechargable seemed worth a shot. Size wise, it's a pretty accurate fit (it sits nicely right beside my American Spirits in my usual case). Too bad it doesn't have any taste. But, the form factor seems reasonable, so if I can figure out a way to refill the carto with better ejuice, that might be a good start for my wife.

They can probably be refilled... it may be a PITA, but can still be done... I know people have refilled Blu carts, and I refilled the crappy carts with the old Smoking Anywhere cigs. Once you empty a cart, look down in it and see how it's put together, the Smoking Anywhere carts had a little bit of stuffing down in them (not sure what it was) I dripped some juice in them and re-used them... even pulled the stuffing out and replaced it with various materials (cotton from cotton balls, shredded tea bags, etc...) Get creative!!

You may want to look for devices that have a 510 threaded connection. Most of the cartomizers that are often used on the cigalikes are that thread, so going that way initially might save you some $$ in the long (or even short!) run. You can get them empty and fill with whatever you want. Several times before tossing :)

I got a coupon in the mail yesterday for a free Vuse and a free cartridge refill. I use pretty advanced equipment and I haven't used an e-cigarette that looks like a cigarette in a long time, but hey, it was free! I figured if nothing else it might be something I could just stick in my pocket for a quick trip out of the house and if I didn't like it I could just give to somebody that might. Well I tried it at work and was very pleasantly surprised. Pretty good flavor reminiscent of the full flavor Marlboro's that I smoke and throat hit similar to a real cigarette. The package insert claims a cartridge is the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes, I doubt if I will use it often enough to prove or disprove that. Even without the free coupon the price isn't bad though, $9.99 for the e-cig and $5.99 for the refills. Another advantage is they are readily available as gas stations/convenience stores. I don't know if it matters to you or not but they are manufactured by big tobacco, RJ Reynolds [Winston-Salem] to be exact. Again, I don't know if it matters to you or not but they do claim to be the only mass market e-cig manufactured entirely in the USA

Just a little update, now that I'm back from Gen Con. :)

Came across a few other cigalikes that I decided to give a try on.

1. Neo. Size is good, but the draw is pretty tight. Flavor was not bad, but not great.
2. Envy Nirvana. Size is a little larger than an analog, but not so much so that it's annoying. Draw is pretty good, and flavor was, again, not bad but not great.

The real gem, though, is that I also got ahold of some Halo Torque 56 juice. The Envy cartos weren't too difficult to open up and refill, and man, does the Torque 56 make a difference! I very quickly started preferring that over my normal American Spirits mediums, and am actually bummed sitting here at work right now because it looks like the battery on the Envy I charged last night didn't actually take a charge, so I have to do analogs today. ;)

Since the Halo juice is so tasty, I'm pretty seriously considering going for the Halo G6, with the smaller battery. Looking online, it appears the diameter is about the same as the Envy that we have, so for me that won't be a problem. My wife may still have a little issue, but she's found that if she takes the foil wrapper off the Envy carto and replaces it with paper (conveniently, it remains sticky enough that she can do so), it satisfies her tactile feel a lot more, so I think it will be something that will help her make the switch, too. She also really liked the Torque 56 flavor.

Thanks for the update, Valander! I was wondering how things were progressing with you and the wife...

Glad to see that you've found some promising alternatives. It's awesome that you found a juice that you like so much, and even very cool about peeling the foil off to replace with paper! Anything that helps is definitely a good thing!!

Keep us updated, and of course, come back if you have any questions!
