Hi all. Recent convert to vaping.... or I should say almost-convert. Still smoking the stinkies but only a handful a day. I got an N300 starter kit from NHaler about 3 weeks ago I guess. I've been taking the vape to work, and saving the analogs for evenings and after meals.

Going into this adventure, I could not see using any of the food/drink/candy type liquids, and didn't quite get the appeal there. I smoke fairly high quality RYO (Bali Shag, Stokkebye), and before that, 10 years ago, I was paying top dollar for high end packs (Nat Sherman, Export A, etc). I actually *enjoy* smoking, like the taste of a good smoke, and assumed I could come close to that with a tobacco-based liquid. Well, I've tried several juices so far, that many users and reviewers have claimed was "the closest thing to analog," "easily my all day vape," and "just like the real thing." However, reading these reviews makes me wonder if we are vaping the same stuff, because nothing has come anywhere close to smoking a good cig for me. I've tried the following, and most of them, to my tongue, taste like the same stuff with different flavors thrown in. There's a common "maple syrup" type vibe that they all seem to share. This I'm guessing must be the actual PG/VG, since it's the one thing they all have in common. Here's the list, with my impressions:

Nhaler:
RY Not - sweet caramel
Flue cured - sweet and vaguely spicy/peppery
Signature Tobacco - just sweet
I don't get anything like tobacco from any of these.

Backwoods Brew:
Adirondack - Good. Earthy, vaguely pine-ish at first, but that mellowed out after a week or so.
Virginia - This is actually one of my favorites so far, but that surprises me because it's sweet. Almost sickenly so. I would describe it as smelling and even tasting a bit like cotton candy.
Smoke - Similar to NHaler's flue cured. Slightly sweet and spicy.
Backo - I wonder if they might have made a mistake prepping this one. It looks, smells and tastes like nothing at all. It has almost no color, odor or flavor to me.
Now from what I understand, these are Naturally Extracted Tobaccos. But, while they come a lot closer to that (in the sense of smelling/licking a wet, uncured, even uncut tobacco leaf), they still are a far cry from smoking anything.

Heather's Heavenly Vapes:
Legend - A ha. I think we're getting somewhere. I do taste something vaguely tobacco-ish here. But again, there's a sweetness that throws it off. While I could see this as having an aromatic pipe tobacco origin, it almost leaves with a grape taste, but fake grape. Like a grape Tootsie Pop, which is just odd.
Dark Horse - This one is similar to Legend, but maybe more earth, less Tootsie-grape.
Huntsman - Very earthy, plant-y, with some sweetness on inhale and a dry exhale. This is probably the most "natural" of the bunch, but still not like smoking.
Mocha Java Smooth - I added this one to the sampler pack because I was getting discouraged by the tobacco flavors and started to wonder if I should just give up on that and try a different flavor altogether. This one really does taste like the name. Definite coffee taste with a bittersweet mocha in there. A nice change, enjoyable after dinner, but a little goes a long way. Too long.

Now, I've ordered another sampler from HHV, to try the rest of their purity tobacco offerings, and I got larger bottles of Legend and Dark Horse, because I did enjoy those and could see settling in with them if nothing else grabs me.

And I've ordered some of the house NETs from GoodeJuice as well, yet to arrive.

So for those of you still with me, thanks for your patience. I write all this not to knock any of the vendors at all. Not my intention. These are just my n00b first impressions. I admit I might easily be doing something wrong. My delivery system has variable voltage, so maybe I haven't found the right heat for each of these. At first I was setting it on the high side, around 4.3V, and quickly found that everything tasted burnt after a few toots, so I dialed it down, and erring on the lower side now. Usually keeping it between 3.3 - 3.8V.

I guess the point in all this is that I'm hoping to find someone who can either validate my experience so far, or maybe tell me something obvious that I'm missing that fixes everything. I have read that I just shouldn't expect to get anything like a cigarette smoking experience from vaping, period. And that seems to be the case. But I'm also perplexed by all the juice reviews I've read, and how the experience others are having has been so consistently and utterly different from my own.

Thanks! How's that for an intro post? :vapor:

I don't, nor have I ever, smoked tobacco juices, so my opinion is moot there :) I'm sure someone can pop in and recommend some of the "closest possible",,,,

I just wanted to say, though, that don't pooh pooh the fruit and other flavored juices,,,,,,

many people find that they like them better, and never want a tobacco flavored juice again,,,,,

that's not to criticize your choice :) Many people DO like the tobacco flavored juices and continue to use them solely for years,,,,,

but it might not hurt to get a sample pack of different flavors to try :)

There are a couple factors at play here. First, you're still smoking cigs so your taste buds haven't healed up yet. Second, there is no e liquid that will taste like an analog, no matter what any review says, because a large part of the flavor in a cig comes from combustion. When you vape, there is no combustion taking place, so it is impossible to replicate. I would suggest looking into menthol and menthol tobacco flavors. Once you have been off the stinkies for a week or two and your sense of taste and smell comes back, you will be surprised to find that fruit/drink/candy flavors will be more appealing.

My key to success was picking juices that have flavor that I like in every day life. For instance, I like vanilla, so I picked that flavor. Any time I tried to find a juice that tasted like the analog I was used to, I was severely disappointed. After almost a year and a half of vaping, I could not imagine vaping anything that tasted like tobacco or an analog.
So, my suggestion, like others, is to find a flavor that is far away from the analogs that you are smoking now. Find something you like, and after a week or two, your opinion might change, because your taste buds have changed.

This past week-end, I tried Non-flavored juice...it was like a super light real cigarette taste to me, especially at the end.
It was a nice change from all the candy sweet juices I had been trying, like the super sweet vanilla and caramel...just a thought.
Hope you find something that will help you kick the habit!

@Redneck Woman, where did you get the super sweet vanilla?

From a local shop that mixes it...he probably won't tell me the actual flavor supplier, because he knows I have a friend who makes his own juice! It's 60/40 and called Madagascar Vanilla. I also like Caramel Frappe. My friend who mixes makes a nice Apple Pie, with a touch of cinnamon! Nice! ( Sorry I can't be of more help! )

No, that helps! Thanks!

Welcome, Bustamelon.

My experience has something in common with yours. When I quit cigarettes (which are only analogous to cigarettes, in my opinion), I tried to find tobacco flavors that tasted like either a cigarette or good pipe tobacco. I also got some lemon, lemon/lime, and green apple flavors just for the hell of it, and for variety's sake. My objective was to vape something that would be a close substitute for the taste of a cigarette, and something lighter, just to keep it from getting boring. Overall, I didn't want to smoke any more.

What happened? First, like you, I found that vapor does not taste like tobacco smoke. Period. Full stop. Second, after puffing madly on vape gear with pseudo-tobacco tastes, and heavy nicotine doses, I began to like the citrus tastes more, and use the "tobacco" flavored juices less. Now, after nearly two months—and no cigarettes for at least a month—I routinely vape citrus and other fruit flavors most of the time, and use the 'tobacco' juice for occasional variety.

My taste buds are changing, and I've let go of the quest for a cigarette substitute. I get my now lower dose of nicotine from the vapor, and the addiction to fiddling with an object and putting it in my mouth is well satisfied by the tip of a protank or mini. It is no longer about a fruitless (no pun intended) quest to replicate smoking.

Suggestions, for what they may be worth: (A) wean yourself off cigarettes, by whatever means may work for you; (B) try lots of flavored juices, including some you may think will not work for you. Finally, if you can find a talented mixer who will work with you to fine-tune a juice to make it appealing, please give that a try. I gave lots of "special requests" to the mixmaster at Juice-e-vapes.com, and he blended something that really pleases me. A few weeks from now, I might ask him to tone down the sour, add a touch of this or that, and see how I like it. It's all a moving target for this beginner, but I'm optimistic and not smoking.

@Redneck Woman, where did you get the super sweet vanilla?

Killa Vanilla is the best sweet vanilla I have found - its by HighCaliber. I get it here High Caliber US E-Liquid as I have been to their B&M - but I am sure others carry it too. I have a very light true vanilla from GoodLife also, the rest I have tried are not so good...LOL...

Also if you look for Madagascar Vanilla - do not get it from MBV - it taste like black jelly beans and chemicals - not vanilla LOL.

Thanks! Good to know I'm not alone out there. I will be sure to try different stuff. I've considered some vanilla offerings, as I do enjoy that flavor. Also saw a Tiramisu out there that intrigues me...

Thanks for the info so far, all.
@CreepyLady: there is actually a whole monster thread dedicated to natural tobacco liquids, and I've been poring through that one. I'm about halfway through it.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-e-liquid-discussion/274904-natural-tobaccos.html

I'm sure those guys know everything there is to know about all these liquids, if only I could ask there.

I was going to link you there, but I wasn't sure if you would have access to it yet. You will be able to post there soon just get a few more posts under your belt and you will gain access :)
