I found this forum on accident, looking for information on vaping. My dear 20 something son bought me a vape rig on my repeated threats to quit smoking. So, I made a plan, stuck to it and quit smoking and started vaping. I smoked for over 30 years (started when I was 11-so not proud of that). As my quit date approached, my dear son took me to a couple of local vape store to test out liquids and I chose a menthol flavor of 12 mlg of nicotine that worked for me. So, I have been ciggy free for 5 weeks-YAY-but I have developed this nasty phlem issue that I am trying to figure out...so here I am, looking for answers...I wasn't a heavy smoker (1/2 a pack a day), just a consistent smoker, so I am not feeling a tremendous relief from quitting smoking, other than the relief of not planning my day around cigarettes...soooo, any advice would be welcome at this point...thanks!!

Hi and welcome Amya :)

It's normal to have a bit of coughing & phlem initially -- your system is clearing out the junk from the ciggs.

Congrats on quitting ciggs!! :D It's not easy but after the recovery is over you are going to notice a very positive change -- just be prepared to be able to taste and smell better !! I bet your son is going to be cleaning his room much more often very soon ;)

LOL@son cleaning room...thanks for the reply. Actually, the son son is graduating from college this weekend, so my hope is that he cleans his room out into boxes and his own place :)...so, the phlem problem will eventually go away...I wasn't a heavy smoker, so while I do see the difference in smell and taste, I haven't noticed a huge difference in breathing, etc...ah well, I am happy to be done with ciggies and I will eventually wean off of vaping as well...

Welcome to ECF and congrats on making the switch! Maybe the lack of relief comes from replacing cigarettes instead of quitting all together? Maybe its that feeling a dependency? If its that or what tehdarkaura has said then what I can say is that it gets better over time.

Well, I am actually very grateful to have a crutch right now and I am not ashamed to admit that. I am giving myself a full six months to kick it all...I plan on stepping down the nicotine in a very slow progression. I was just surprised by the constant clearing of my throat...it seemed excessive and a little worrisome...but, looks like it is normal...

to ecf Amya. Nice to meet you and so glad you are here. Just a wonderful place to be. Everything I googled about vaping led me here, so I know what you mean. A big congrats to you on the vaping. That is awesome. I never experienced this issue but I have read so many posts where people did, so I think it is completely normal. Sort of makes sense to be getting rid of all the gunk we had in our lungs. Here is a great list of things to read and it has a very good list of some of the other symptoms you may experience.

Hello,

First off, well done for stopping smoking.
People react to quitting smoking and vaping differently. So nothing I say, or anyone else for that matter, would mean your experience would be the same. However, if you've quit smoking recently then you are indeed likely to have more phlegm as your lungs start clearing out. On the other hand, personally I've experienced more phlegm when using e-liquid with higher Vegetable Glycerine (VG) %. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water, vaping dries you out, which doesn’t help.
