Hello newbie here.

Hello, I figured introduction first. I'm Taryn live in a town north of Cincinnati. I currently am a Corrections Officer of 7+ years. I am also a foster home for reptiles for my local reptile rescue. They are like my children. Have 7 snakes, 5 various lizards, a dog and a cat. I also have 2 wild girls ages 5 and 3. Married for 3 years, together for 10 total.

Boring stuff over now, I have been smoking cigarettes for 15 years. I'm only 28. Yes I know, under 18. I am proud to say, smoking e cigs I have been cigarette(?) Free since Friday at 1044pm. I have a madvapes ego (I think) battery. Various liquids and tanks. Not sure what these liquid holders are called. Cartomizers maybe? Either way, I've been mixing strawberry and 18 mg of nicotine or blueberry and 18 mg of nicotine.

I know I've only been off cigs for 3 days, but thanks to these ecigs I don't have any withdrawal symptoms other than wanting to hurt my husband. He is using these too. I don't even want a regular cigarette (think you guys call them analog). Either way, naturally I have questions.

I think we all agree, these are definitely safer. I'm still worried about breathing something in my lungs. I quit to get healthier. Any ideas? I've read both good and bad. I've been a troller for a few days now.

I'm also wanting something verified. The health of my children and animals are a higher priority than myself. Is it 100% safe for those around me?

Sorry for the long post, while I'm thankful to them, I'm also skeptical. We've always been taught anything inhaled is harmful.

Either way, thanks for reading.

You smoked for ten years around them, but now you are worried about a lil vapor? I nor anyone else can tell you yes it is one thousand percent safe for you and those around you. BUT everyone can tell you it's one thousand percent not as bad a cigarette ash tar and carcinogens. Every ingredient is proven to be non toxic from what I have read. Congratz on quiting smoking. I did three months ago and I have never been happier or healthier.

I understand that I'm just worried. I quit to be healthy. I still enjoyed smoking though. I guess I'm just worried, it will be like I never even quit. Almost like I gave one bad habit up for another.

I do have a question about quitting. I haven't noticed any difference in taste, smell, I cough a little mostly at night. I keep telling myself it takes time, but shouldnt I notice some difference?

Welcome Taryn, I don't a have specific answer to your health question but I have noticed that my nose is starting to operate again ( I quit analog "real cigarettes" 9 or so days ago) and my house is really funky smelling now (just want to let you know regarding your reptiles - I owned a pet store 20+ years ago and heard constant complaints from customers in my reptile room - normally had 75+ snakes and 50+ bigger reptiles (including a 6 ft caiman (raised him from a 12 inch pup - sigh - he went with the store when I sold it)) even though I had positive airflow and electronic ozonizers (similar to the room filters you can get but larger than what most bars had to deal with smoke when smoking was legal in public - ah, the "good??" old days)
anyway, you may discover some of the odors that assorted reptiles can create no matter how fastidious you are with their care will shock you :)

That's true. Thanks guys. I guess I'm just worried. I can always gradually step down the nicotine. I tried strawberry today with no nicotine and it was very strong. Plus side it has curbed my sweet tooth a bit.

I can't wait to see what my reptiles actually smell like. They're all over my house lol.

Thanks guys. I enjoy this very much. Already have about $150 invested in only 3 days. I just hope it is ok. Your right though it is better than analogs regardless.

I didn't know there was a difference in e cigs and vaping. Ill research that. I was originally researching e cigarettes not vaping.

Welcome in. There is no difference between smoking an ecig and vaping. Smoking an ecig would literally mean your setting it on fire and inhaling plastic. Its like calling a shotgun shell a bullet. Technically different but everyone knows what you mean. I guess no one knows if vaping is absolutely safe but I'm betting its safer than smoking. It gives you all the benefits of smoking while most likely being healthier. It doesn't smell and will save a ton of money eventually. A very good compromise.

Welcome to ECF! From the research I did, I think vaping is much better than smoking. I don't think anyone can guarantee you it's 100% safe. It took me a couple weeks to really notice that my lungs felt better and my taste buds were coming back. I spent the first week hacking up stuff, but that ended after the first week. Then I spent the second and third week with my taste buds alternating between working better and not working at all. You do have to be patient, which is hard for me. I don't know anything about reptiles, but my dog has been obsessed with smelling my hair. I've begun to believe that she misses the second-hand nicotine she was getting when I smoked and is trying to figure out where it went.

Be sure you drink lots of water and hang in there!

I do have a question about quitting. I haven't noticed any difference in taste, smell, I cough a little mostly at night. I keep telling myself it takes time, but shouldnt I notice some difference?

You said three days? Nah, not enough time. Give it a while, you'll notice differences. Big ones.

Far as "second hand" issues, nobody's all that clear about it at this point. If you're exposing others to anything, it would be a small amount of nicotine at worst. Compared to cigarettes? Well, there are 50+ known carcinogens in cigarettes. And some nicotine. So... the vapor is not nearly as bad.

Given it's basically a water vapor, the droplets aren't going to hang around in the air nearly as much as smoke can. The particles of cig smoke are much, much smaller and can drift in the air for a long time. And the base liquids that produce the vapors in e-cigs are made of substances that are used in tons of consumer products. You already had them in your house before you started vaping.

I'd say if you're concerned about the health of the kids and animals, you've already taken a big step in that cig smoke has tons of cancer causing agents among thousands of chemicals. Vaping? Well, there's some nicotine (like cigs) and flavoring. Nothing that's known to cause cancer by the way. Also, you ever been around a "fog machine"? That's the same vapor. Yeah, e-cigs are basically mini fog machines. With nicotine. :)

Far as inhaling the vapor yourself, well, we don't know. The long term effects of vaping are just not known. This whole "e-cig" thing is only about 10 years old now (there was a patent taken out decades ago but the first commercial product hit the market about 2003). But the "bet" here is that it's safer. And I don't know how it could be anything but safer. The base liquids used (the stuff that makes the vapor) are, as I said, commonly used in tons of consumer products you're using now. They're considered safe by every regulatory body on the planet. Yeah, inhaling them as vapors regularly is new. Maybe, over the years, we'll learn that has some kind of ill effect but compare that with tobacco smoke which, last I read, kills about 400,000 a year or more.

And you were already getting nicotine. So that's kind of a wash.

Of course the ideal is to quit completely. No smoking, no vaping. Or, actually, the ideal is never start. But, well, we all kind of... heh, well, oops? :)

I dunno. I take the attitude that maybe twenty years from now, a doctor will say, "It's because you vaped". But the rate I was going with the smoking, I don't know I would be alive to hear a doctor say anything twenty years from now...
