Hello ECF! I am not new to vaping (Been at it for almost 2 years now), still learning everyday. I'm currently running a Valryian 2, usually a single or triple mesh, on a LostVape Thelema quest. I'm looking to get into RTA. mainly because coils for the valryian are not only expensive, they're getting increasingly harder to find.. I purchased a Dead Rabbit v3 awhile back, but I have tried multiple coils, and a million different positions/wicking thicknesses. No matter what I do, I get muted flavor. I am having no luck with this thing, and it's putting me off of rtas. Even though I know they'll be 100x more cost efficient in the long run. Please help! D:

Welcome to ECF @SenpaiBankai! I just recently purchased the Dead Rabbit V3 having used the V2 quite a bit and was wondering the differences. I'll try and build on it tomorrow and see what I come up with. I'll be using basic coils and such, so you won't need to worry about having aliens or anything.

Don't give up on RTAs! They'll treat you right, once you figure them out. =)

Okay, so. I just wicked the Dead Rabbit V3 and put up a little tutorial for it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for this! I'm wondering if I'm either using too much/not enough cotton. Or just the wrong cotton. I'm using cotton bacon prime right now. I'm going to do a step by step of what you did and hope I nail it. Thank you again!

I doubt it's the cotton, unless you're using some knock-off brand or something you're not supposed to be using like cotton balls, lol. Cotton Bacon has a good rep, although you won't find me paying that much for cotton. =P

Make sure when you're wicking your coil, that you have enough cotton feeding through that it almost wants to distort the shape of the coil. You want there to be quite a bit of resistance, but not so much that it's near impossible to get the cotton through. Once those are in and they're positioned correctly, fluff/comb/thin the wick ends, then trim. Trim conservatively as you can always trim a little bit more off in spots that need it.

    Lemme know how it goes!

Well, so far on this attempt my wicks keep splitting in half and getting stuck in the "bell" of the thing. Would that mean they're too thin?
Splitting in half as in they're burning in half? Or do you mean when you prime the wick ends with juice and then put the chamber (bell) onto the deck, it's pinching/cutting off the wick ends? Do you have a picture to show what you mean?

It seems like they're burning in half, cause the first 2 or 3 hits (while still muted) are decent hits. But after that they seem to take ages to heat up the wick.
    Try less wicking.

    The general rule for wicking:
Wick too loose in coil = flooding/leaking --and-- Too tight in coil = dry hits, burnt wick, muted flavor.

Wicking is an art. You do not want your wick to be loose fitting, or freely moving, when you move the cotton side-to-side in the coil. On the other end of the spectrum, you do not want your wick to be too tight in the coil.

Ideally you want to feel some resistance, or firmness, as you move your wick side-to-side in a coil. Not too tight, as in moving the coil, and not too loose. There is a sweet spot every vaper needs to find on their own. Finding the sweet spot "is a total feel thing".

Yes. Different brands of cotton can, and will, make a difference in the flavor you experience. Cotton that is not very "clean" will adversely affect flavor.

Some years ago I tried nearly every cotton available. Thought most were, ummm, crap.

Since 2015 I've used CottonMan's Mavaton's Select and Carolina Blend cottons. I also use Tidi medical grade large rayon balls (#969162).

There is near zero break-in time with CottonMan cotton and Tidi rayon. And the flavor is truly amazing - - - especially compared to every other wicking material I've tried.

    Good luck! :)

I'm starting to think it was the coils I got, I just picked up a set of premades from my local shop. They're very tiny so I'm thinking I'm not able to wick this the way it needs to be. Cause I have followed all y'alls tips and videos.. And there's still barely any flavor. :/

    It's all trial and error.

Have you thought about picking up a single coil RDA from your local shop?

RDA's are a breeze to coil and wick. And it's near impossible to beat the flavor one gets from an RDA. I've yet to try any RTA that comes close. Well, maybe a couple like the Squape Arise or Dvarw DL RTA's.

Wouldn't I have to drip though? I want the ease/portability of a sub-ohm but, the coils themselves have been going up in price and rarity lately.

With an RDA you have two choices. Dripping or squonking. I do both. But I also enjoy my RTA's.

In my opinion a decent RDA on a squonker is tough to beat. A squonk bottle can hold anywhere from 6ml to 10ml. And for flavor, it is tough to beat.

I buy spools of wire and roll my own coils. It's much cheaper versus buying pre-made coils.

You will need a coil winding kit for this, but it's actually quite simple once you see a video or two on how to wind your own coils from a spool of wire.
It seems like they're burning in half, cause the first 2 or 3 hits (while still muted) are decent hits. But after that they seem to take ages to heat up the wick.
Can you take some pictures? If the wicks were burning in half, you would definitely be getting a burnt flavor instead of a muted flavor.

I'm wondering if you didn't thin the wick ends enough, and it's plugging up the juice ports. It would make sense because you're vaping what you primed the coil with (first 2-3 puffs), but once you attach the top part of the atomizer back on, it's not wicking correctly.
