image.jpgSo this is my first micro coil build. Everything was going great...

Glowing from the inside out? Check!
No overlap? Check!
Ohm reading? About 2.0 ohms (28g kanthal, 12 wraps on 1/16" drill bit).

So at this point, I was basically done. All I had left to do was clip off the excess leads. I used a pair of manicure nippers so I could get close to the +\- posts. I thought I was golden, and might I add, pretty proud of myself, seeing as how this actual coil was attempt #5 of the night.

just to be safe, I checked the ohms again. 6.6. Then again. 7.7. This went on, jumping all over the place.

im not understanding what I did wrong? The length of the leads matters? Did I maybe clip them too close?

It could also be that one of the wires wasn't caught well enough by the screw and when you clipped it off it didn't make contact anymore? Take some tweezers and see if one of the ends is loose where it sticks into the holes on the posts. If it's not caught you can back off the screw, readjust that end of the coil and try to catch it with the screw again.

Just to chime in - yes, you have a short, and it's probably due to the screws not being tight, or the legs not being sufficiently in contact with the posts.

To answer your question - length of wire does matter! The resistance of a coil is just a factor of its length - that's why you can get the same Ωs from 30g as 28g if you change the diameter of the coil, or the number of wraps.

Best of luck, it's looking good so far!

Thanks to all for your help. I'm getting insanely frustrated with this coil nonsense. Now I stayed up all night and work is gonna suck so bad today. Worst part is I don't even have anything working to show for my night.

Ugh. I need real life help I think.

I'll keep at it. Eventually I have to get it right...at least that's what I'm choosing to believe!

Practice makes perfect. Looks pretty good so far, could use some coil squeezing to make the coils nice and snug. Push the fire button on your mod till the coil glows red, let go of the button and squeeze the entire coil till it cools down may have to do it a couple of times but you will know when you get there. Also make sure you do not over tighten your post screws, it can actually cut the wire inside the posts and your coil will appear to be mounted but its actually broken and the results are some funky reading Ω's Just snug the screws and occasionally check them and you are good to go!
