I spin your unit on the lathe at approximatley 800rpm and do my first passes with 400 grit (to remove machine marks and pits and to align the caps with the body) and then make my final passes with approximately 600 grit. ( I say approximately, because it depends on how fresh my pad is).

I'm just curious. If someone didn't want to part with their PV, couldn't they take it to their local machine shop and ask them to buff it?

It's just like any other specialty skill. I installed flooring for 8 years and neither of my bosses would even set up there tools for anything less than 200 dollars. Depending on the shop, I am sure their minimum would be less than that but even if it was 75 I think I would just buy another p18 or 16.
