I'm getting ready to extract some pipe tobaccos from cold maceration and I am thinking I'm going to use the Aeropress to filter them. The first filtering will be with one or two of the Aeropress filters (I like the idea of sqeezing all that I can out of the tobacco!) and then with a 2 micron filter in the Aeropress. I was thinking of using these:

Ahlstrom 6420-0700 Eaton-Dike Filter Paper, 2 Micron, Medium Flow, Grade 642, 7cm Diameter (Pack of 100)

Anyone have any advice on the 2 micron filters? Would these work if cut down to size? These are as close to the Aeropress size (2.5") that I could find. I know it will take some pressure and time to filter this, but I plan on using hand pressure on the first filtering and using a weight assisted filtering through the 2 micron filter.

I was also curious if anyone using the Aeropress has found that it ruins it for coffee, as I am all for "re-purposing" things but it would be a bonus to be able to use it for coffee also! :D

Thanks.

I use 7cm, 2 micron Ahlstrom filters (0740-0700) which has a better wet (burst) strength.
The 642 grade will work ok for gravity filtering but if you are going to use the press get the stronger filter.
The price is higher but you can rinse and reuse the filter 2 or 3 extractions. Just backwash with hot water, and then fill the
press with hot water and let drain. You can clean the Aeropress with soap and water, no problem.

Hey Boxter, thanks! I jumped over to Amazon and ordered some. Two day Prime shipping is a great thing, but Amazon can be addicting! Thanks for the link. It's nice to know I won't have to trim the filters down to use in the Aeropress. I'll be using pressure for both the initial and second filtering. I actually have a 10 lb. Kettlebell that I think might work for placing on the Aeropress and letting it do the work on the second filtering. We'll see. It might be too heavy, but you'd be surprised how much force one exerts when pressing on something. If that doesn't work, I can try the shot in a bag method or maybe find something at the used sporting goods store. What can I say, I like creative problem solving! :D Planning on doing the extraction this weekend. That will be 5 weeks of PG cold maceration for 4 different tobacco types from Pipes & Cigar:

Missouri Meerschaum American Patriot
Rowland Gold
Peter Stokkebye 83 Amsterdam
Lane 1Q

I did a sample of the Lane the other day using cotton and a syringe and mixed it in with some Flavor Arts Virginia and it was quite good, so I'm psyched to see what I have here. Thanks for the advice and especially on the idea of reusing the filters. They're quite a bit more, but I'm sure worth it if they can hold up to the pressure. I'll post my results and possibly some photos when I'm done.

Your welcome molimelight.

Be sure to lube the plunger with some pg or vg otherwise it will stick.
Another hint: for your first pass filtering, just pour the extract into the press (one coffee filter)keeping the tobacco in your jar otherwise the filter will clog.
After that has filtered, pour the tobacco into the Aeropress to press out the remaining extract. This will save you some time.

The only tobacco that I've tried of the four you mentioned is Lane 1Q.
At first I thought it was meh, but after some aging turn out very good. I also like Lane BCA.

good luck
