Help understanding ohms and voltage

Basically all you need to do is to follow the Ohms Plus Two Formula.

  • Find out what resistance (ohm rating) your coil is. The Provari has a built-in ohm meter.

  • Take the resistance and add the number "2" to that number. The sum will be the voltage to set your Provari to.

  • For example, say your coil reads out to be 2.0 ohm. Add the number two. 2 + 2 = 4 volts.

  • Another example: 1.5 ohm coil plus two equals 3.5 volts.

So what are the advantages using something high resistance vs low?
Personal preference, basically. Of course, we are discussing factory made-coils in this discussion.

LR (low resistance) coils burn faster and hotter, make warmer vapor, and use slightly more power from the battery.

SR (standard resistance) coils take a little longer to heat up and produce a cooler vapor, and use slightly less power from the battery.


Low resistance coils are often used with a fixed voltage device (mechanical mod) to simulate the higher voltage experience that you get with a regulated variable voltage mod.

People who seek a cooler vape experience use a higher resistance coil.

If you have lower resistances you can get bigger wattage "easily". My mod has a maximum of 5Volts so, for example, with 3,5Ohms I can only get to 7Watts.

If you have a battery that has a fixed voltage output, for example on an eGo (3,3Volts). If you use that with something above 2,5Ohms, you're not getting a tasty vape.

And it's really sad that B&M stores just sell people stuff without educating them. I went into a locally-owned health food store last year and encountered a young lady (maybe young-ish 30-year-old) employee vaping on an ego and vivi nova tank. We discussed some things, and I brought my Provari in for her to see. When we put her tank on my Provari, it read 3.0 ohms. I bumped the voltage up to 4.9v and let her take a vape from her tank on my APV. She was astounded and then cornered me several minutes later to shuttle me to the back of the store to ask if she could take another hit.

Why would anyone sell a 3.0 ohm tank to a customer with an ego battery?! Yeah...either employee ignorance or just getting rid of stock to people who don't know.
