I just bought a de-bang clearomizer, 2.1 ohm, and with strings on the inside. The guy at the store said it was universal and should work on the battery I have but when I screw it in and press the button the light just blinks three times and nothing else happens. The battery is fully charged. Does this mean it's the wrong type of clearomizer?

We'll need more info on exactly what "battery" you're using. Those "strings" are most likely the wick material BYW. What you are describing could be that the positive pin (center) of you tank is not making contact with the battery. You may need to take the whole setup to that shop and see what they figure out.
If the center pin of the battery is not making a connection with the atomizer of the clearomizer/tank here is something you can try.
This usually occurs from over-tightening the tank onto the battery connector. Just make sure that if you use something conductive (metal) to pry up on the center pin that you do NOT hit the fire button while you are working on the battery. Or better yet, turn off the battery.

Either your clearo is not making the electrical contact, or it has a problem, like a short or something.
It will be the correct type of clearomiser IF it is physically threading onto your battery. There are only two fittings really, and it would be obvious if you bought an eGo clearo (which is 99% likely) and couldn't attach it to the battery.

The Halo Triton has the same type of top coil with the "string" wicks. When I first started using them, they would have the same problem (with the light on the button blinking when you push it). What I found was that the coil was screwed in too tight in the clearomizer. If you loosen the coil just a quarter turn, the problem goes away. Give this a try and see if that fixes your problem.
If you're using an eGo type battery, a blinking fire button means either the battery is low on charge or the juice delivery device has a short in the heating coil.
