I was interested in building my first mod. I was going to use the evolv dna12 it seemed pretty clear until I got to the potentiometer, which simpely I could use a wheel potentiometer I was going to ask which one people recomended, but i was also interested in using a potentiometer that was push button and had a digital display. that's where I got into trouble....where would I get such a thing and how do I wire it......help

I don't know about any wheel potentiometers, but they should be simpler than digital pots, as would any analog potentiometer.

Mouser Electronics - Electronic Components Distributor

That site has just about any component that you might need. You can find digital pots there. You'd want to refine the search for 10k ohm ones, and decide how much resolution that you want. I'd probably look for somewhere between 64 and 256 step ones, with non-volatile memory.

You won't need much power rating for them, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'd look for through-hole mounted ones, as they will be fairly easy to work with. Be sure to get linear-taper, so that the voltage adjustment will be uniform across it's range.

They have links to the datasheets for the components that they sell on each item's page, and those will tell you how to wire them. Not all datasheets are as helpful as others might be, so I'd look for one with a decent sheet.

The digital ones have different ways of operating, and the datasheet will describe that as well. Any normally open switch would usually do as the control switches.

I really appreciate your help, but that was all greek to me, I will try my best to decipher it. My knowledge of electronics is being slowly gleaned from these fourms, I would say my understanding is at the stage of "the wheels on the bus go round and round"

For a more simple answer. The DNA 12 has three holes for the potentiometer(pot) 7, 8, and 9 I believe. 7 being the positive connection, 8 the wiper, and 9 the negative. Next the pot has three lags also positive, wiper and negative. Positive and negative will be on the outside and the wiper always in the middle. All that is required is to connect the positive leg to hole 7, wiper leg to 8 and so on. As far as the kind of pot almost any resistance will work but the adjustment becomes to fine or to loose. A 10k ohms is recommended. One like this will work just fine. http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/3352W-1-103LF/3352W-103LF-ND/1088355

Also if you would like the wheel to work in the opposite direction it is acceptable to switch the positive and negative leads, holes 7 and 9. This will just make the wheel work in reverse. This can be useful for mounting and wiring. Take a look at the data sheet it will give some good dimensions as well as other useful info.

Feel free to contact me with any other questions you might have.

Good luck.

Hey critter,

thanks for putting that in a language I could understand.I apprreciate also your offer to help with any other questions I might have., but in fairness that maybe an offer you'd regret, as I have alot of questions, and alot of interest....and alot of ignorance about electronics. My main intrest as of late has been in the ceramic wick forum, but I feel I have a good grasp of it , and am looking to branch out into mod building, and diy juices.
