I have read so much in the last few days about these e cigarettes i may start losing my mind! i have smoked for 15+ years quitting many times (i have no idea why i start again). a friend of my sisters was telling me a little about these and i thought i'd give them a try, but honestly there is just too much to choose from. i don't know where to start. i don't know if i should buy a starter kit or what. i don't want to spend a small fortune because what if i decided they are not for me? then i see all these other things that go with or in them and i'm totally lost. so, where should i start? are the different liquids that go in them different than the cartridge things or does the liquid go in the cartridge? if i want different flavors do i buy liquid or cartridge? thanks in advance! i know this has probably been covered over and over, but its just so much to read though. :

You're in the right place... if you want a good beginning tutorial, check the Stickies in this forum for Videos for Newbies (particularly broke newbies) or something like that... she really does a good job between the 6 videos, and you'll come out understanding a lot more than reading text.

Plus, I know there are going to be about 20 more replies here with helpful suggestions and advice... maybe check back between videos ;)

Welcome, and good luck! You've found yourself a great place to learn!

I am fairly new to this to. My suggestion is that you check your local gas station for the disposible e cig and give it a try. There is a tobbacco and a menthol flovered one. If you dont think its something you would like your only out 10 bucks or so. I sone relized after i started vaping that tobbacco is rather unpleasent tasting and there are soooo many better flavors out there to choose from. Hope this helps some.

Howdy! I've posted a response to a similar thread, from earlier today...

Bienvenido/Welcome!

I've only been at this about a month, but the array of options and vendors is daunting! A few things I've found:

1. The closest thing to a "standard" seems to be the 510 platform (This includes 510, Ego, Riva, etc). If you get a "510 compatible", you can use it on a wide range of stuff.
2. Once you get into this, and quit smoking, you will want a somewhat larger battery. 650mah or larger is good. And buy two batts.
3. Liberty Flights seems to have a good selection, and they're headquartered in the UK. A Riva kit would be a good way to go...

Riva Starter Kits Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510
An Ego would also be nice Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Joye eGo
If you really want a mini, these 510 kits might work Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Joye 510

Probably best to start with an Ego or Riva, as the larger batts will come in handy. Again, these are "510-compatible". If you want the mini form factor, you can find often a mini 510 battery & charger for 5 Euros, if you look around.

Buy some Cartomizers, to start with. These are really easy to fill (take off the "condom" cap, add 20 or so drops, and slowly slide it back on). Here are some, from the same vendor... get the 510...
Electronic Cigarette - Cartomizers - Boge Cartomizers

Buy some juice... you may want to experiment with both PG and VG, as some have problems with one or the other. Buying a few 5ml bottles is a nice way to do that. Though I would probably pick out at least one 30ml bottle, so you're sure you have a stockpile and don't run out.

The nice thing is that all will use the same atomizers, so you can swap them across the platforms. And the Ego and Riva are pretty much entirely compatible, with only some very minor differences. Buy one of those kits, along with some cartomizers & juice, and you're on your way. You will probably experiment with other stuff later (eg. mods, tanks, etc.), but those kits will still come in handy and parts will likely be usable.

A few problems with the site you linked to:
1. I don't know what platform it is, but it looks to be something other than 510. You might have difficulty finding replacement cartridges, at a good price.
2. Those small batteries can wear out quickly, especially as you get into this. If you go with an Ego or Riva, you've got something only a bit larger that lasts 3-7x longer.
3. Buy a system that will more easily allow you to drip juices into it. You'll save a lot of money and have fun experimenting. As you get into a Riva or Ego, you can do that.

Welcome!

It can be overwhelming at first, but don't give up! Vaping is the best thing that ever happened to me. For trying out vaping, I would recommend a 510 battery and 510 USB charger, two 510 attys, a 510 drip tip, and a bottle of juice. If you like it, you can expand but these are always great to have as a backup or to give away to get someone else started.

You have made a good decision to check the web and learn before purchasing. Many here started out by picking up a disposable e-cig they happened to see somewhere. It is a lot of reading and understanding to learn the basics. This forum is the perfect place to learn. Look through the "sticky" threads. Check out the ECF library also. When you are ready let us know what you are thinking of getting. There is more help here from lots of people. Good luck down the vaping road!

Who-dat be dat got it right. I got an ego-t kit, and an extra 1000 mah battery. This works out great, as I can remove the tank atty, screw on a 510, LR, or whatever, with or without a cone to pretty it up, choose a drip tip, screw on a cartomizer, etc. The versatility of the 510 system is great, as I can quickly redesign for the occasion or the serious vape. I can easily accommodate various juices at will, as some will taste better/worse depending on the atty and its feeding.

There is no best system because the system that works depends on you and the way you smoke. That can even change over time as you learn to appreciate the nuances of vaping. Also the system that best helps you initially quit may not be what makes you happy in the long run. When you consider your health and what you spend on cigarettes, the cost of moving to a new PV system isn't that great and can be fun. They make inexpensive adapters too, so nothing goes to waste.

For example I use two complete systems, the KR808 for on the go, in public, in the car, etc. and the eGo/dripping in my home office. I like them both for different circumstances. I have no desire to carry around bottles of juice with me and I don't like the attention of a relatively large vaping apparatus in public. I quit with KR808 and could use that exclusively if I had to, but ECF turned me on to LR atomizers and the eGo batteries for more flavor and heat so when I am in the comfort of my home I use that. Someday I'll probably go to variable voltage batteries for the perfect vape with every ejuice, but my needs haven't evolved to that stage yet.

If you still can't decide after watching the videos, please tell us more about where and when you smoke. It would make it easier to give you suggestions.

My suggestions is not to stock up on too much in the beginning. Get enough to meet your current needs with backups for emergencies, but no more. In a few months your needs may change.

I guess this is the part I'm not understanding. with a pack of cigarettes you just go into the store and buy a pack, this seems kind of confusing. i don't want to spend a lot to begin with because as i said i may get this and decide it's just not for me. i smoke while at work mostly, i do not smoke in my car or in my home. i have a 2 year old daughter and i don't like smoking in front of her. i usually don't even smoke a whole cigarette at a time, i use to smoke much more but i quit not too long ago and for some reason started again.

i saw a few kits, one being joye 510, mainly because of the price. will most of the different cartridges fit most of the brands of electronic cigarettes out there or if i buy one am i stuck using only their products?

The 510 is very versatile. There is the Joye 510 standard, Joye 510 Mega, the eGo, the Riva, and many others that use the exact same threads for the battery connection. So all those different 510 atomizers and cartomizers will fit all those 510 threaded batteries.

I started with a standard 510 and had to move up in battery charge time so made my own box mod. I am currently vaping a Cisco LR510 atomizer on The Precious L (v1). I like the 510 atomizers the best. Probably the 901 style atomizer next, with a 510 adapter so it will fit my battery mod. Never found a 510 cartomizer I liked, but I know folks who love them.

The main reason I started with a 510 was because a majority of the folks on here liked them according to a poll I read when I was first starting to look at PV's. The choices off that threading have only increased over time.

I still try other stuff when I can, but always go back to my 510 stuff.

I suggest reading up because you will find what the choices are, what the limitations of each are, and only you know which high points are most important to you and which low points you cannot live with.

I guess this is the part I'm not understanding. with a pack of cigarettes you just go into the store and buy a pack, ...

Hundreds of years of refinement make smoking, and buying, cigarettes easy.

PV's are on their first decade, so it is a completely different world.

The worst part? The hardware is the easy part. The more challenging part, and most rewarding, is finding a juice that works for you. You think there is a huge number of choices for hardware? Wait till you see the vast array of juice available!

Take one step at a time and you'll get there. It is a rewarding journey and each of us walks a slightly different path. Anybody can take a step...

i've been at this for 3 weeks and love it, haven't had a cig since i started. all the stuff in the forums is very helpful but it is alot to read, the videos are priceless and help me greatly, but what helped me the most was the live chat. something about being able to talk to several people with immediate response just worked for me, i would suggest going there and checking it out
