Yikes! $500 for two? Times have changed since I was in college. Sounds like highway robbery!

I used to stand in line at the school bookstore with my one little art history book for $60 and everyone around me had HUGE stacks of books for around a thousand dollars. The person behind me in line asked what my major was and I said fine arts. She just shook her head and said I was lucky. I answered back, "No, not really, I have to buy $500 worth of supplies for painting, $800 for photography, $100 for sculpture, and around $500 for printmaking. Not including the $2500 for ceramics already attached to my class. And that's just the start, as I run out of things I'll need to buy more..." She went  and paid for her books looking very relieved.

Accounting book was $330! $330!!!
I had to take a little vape break before I could commit to that purchase.
I don't even want the stupid thing!!!

I looked over the books used for my former major (geophysics) and books I'd spent $100 for back then were now $500+

Reason number 882 why I should have finished the first time around...sigh.

On a happier note, some friends just randomly picked up a pottery wheel on the cheap.
I'm beyond excited to give it a try, I've always thought it looked super fun.
The dad and the son have taken classes (HS/College) and are going to show us all how to use it....but I may need to fly you up here to give advanced lessons when we're ready. :D

Absolutely!! For the new folks in the studio wanting to throw I tell them this: "Learning to throw is like learning to ride a new bicycle, up a mountain while typing 6,000 words a minute and learning to translate Japanese."

All my students who I say this to come back to me and say, "You were wrong...it's much, MUCH harder!"

The key to everything about throwing pottery is being very stubborn. Just keep doing it, just bang your head against that brick wall until you get better. Only keep two pots, your very first one and your 100th pot. You will see a tremendous improvement between the two. :thumb:

LOL What do you start them with - porcelain?

It's been many, many years since I touched a wheel. I don't know if my back or knee would be able to handle, but my hands are steadier since I no longer drink.

Hardest part was learning how to center the clay without having to trim a most of it off. I don't know if my first pot survived the bisque firing. The 100th I stored with a bunch of my other stuff, but never made it back to pick it all back up.

You just need a standing wheel and you'll be back in no time! :thumb:

My constant challenge for throwing is the wedging. I joke that I can wedge air into bag clay. Funny thing about that is I am able to still center the clay just fine...

Afraid if I took a pottery class...the term "throw" would take on a whole new meaning....
As in: "WHOA! DUCK! Here comes another one!!8-o"
32ga nano coils.....no sweat!!
Clay???? 10 THUMBS!!!
Happy (vaping) Trails!

I have one piece of pottery I made that's in my kitchen. My first and only piece and I use it to keep sugar in the raw in for my coffee. Everyone always asks "oh how cute how little were you when you made this?" and I reply "I was 20. Not 7 or 8. 20." lol.

Spent the day with my sons, daughter in law and sweet grand kids! Best part of the day was watching my son and daughter in law smoke their last two stinky sticks! I have 4 egos, 4 evods, 10 new coils and 6 less bottles of NT juice than I had this morning, but happy to see that they are willing to give vaping a try! Got my fingers crossed! Now I guess grandma has some shopping to do! But I'm really glad I never got rid of some of my older stuff. Gonna miss those 6 bottles of juice though! My daughter in law really loved the Raz Cup, so I sure hope Clark releases more soon! All in all a great day! Hopefully my family will join the NT family!

For that occasion, consider it done. Congrats on helping your son and DIL kick the habit!~
