Hey guys, My name is Nicholas Jackson. I started vaping about a week ago, but started researching for a purchase over a month ago. I ended up buying the Magma deluxe starter kit and some gadgets too... passthrough, drip tip, Volcano brand liquid. I'm a noob for buying Volcano, aren't I? :p I'm pretty happy with it so far, but looking forward to learning more. Kinda dreading time-consuming alternative methods, but willing to try.

So I smoked for about three years, quit cold turkey off and on and then for the last time about 3 months ago, again, cold turkey, no going back. I have asthma and I love beer, so I had to quit smoking because it really made me feel like .... in general, and my already killer hangovers + cigs = death. I'm extremely happy with every aspect of vaping, and proud of taking the leap!

I'm from Portland, OR and I love hardcore i.e. FTFD, Reign Supreme, The Ghost inside, and ..."conscious" hip hop i.e. Blue Scholars, Common Market. Hope I'm not completely alone there! Looking forward to talkin to you guys and learning more. Sorry for the lengthy thread, it's a bad habit of mine. Cheers.

Hey NJ, welcome to ECF! You'll do fine with the Volcano for a while. This becomes more of a hobby than a habit though and if you're anything like me you'll be looking at several different devices before long.
We're planning a trip to Cannon Beach next summer to celebrate my daughter's college graduation. Looks like a beautiful place. We're eyeing a rental property right in front of Haystack Rock (know where that is?).
You like intelligent hip hop? You should check out my boy Jah Connery (literally my son). Here's a link to his site Modern Knot Dot Check out the noise when you get a chance. My boy's the big white guy. Helluva poet I think and he produces all the beats. Gotta promote him every chance I get. :)
Anyway, welcome and good luck with the vapin'. Ask as many questions as you can think of. That's what the newbies area is here for.

Thanks you whiskey and mistinthewoods. I'm starting to absorb some good info, and I'm already finding myself not satisfied with a mediocre VP, just from reading the newbie info. I don't really know what I'm looking for now, though, because so many brand and mod names are dropped! Also, I don't know how much to trust myself with what looks interesting to me due to the "You only think you care about size and likeness to analogs" theory. I feel a little less willing to budge on the issue of a PCC, I really like having one, but don't know which veteran-approved high-quality PV's have the option of using a PCC.

I don't believe I've spent any time at Cannon Beach or Haystack Rock, but I did spend some time in Seaside (just north of Cannon Beach) while I was in high school, and Seaside was amazing. Enchanting, even. I am Oregon born tho, so I love the cold weather and gloomy coast. Have you been to the OR coast before?
Checking out your son's music right know, he sounds really talented and articulate. Is there anywhere I can get a digital download for an album/EP/anything?
Thanks again for the kind welcome.

joye510s use a good PCC (the basic ones do, not sure about getting ones for the bigger battery 510 aka 'eGo') - and I love hte 510 very versatile especially when it comes to modding it. I tended to use my 510 on a PT rather than use a PCC mainly because I work from home so it was a better fit for me. If you get something like an eGo though the batteries do last longer.
Nothing newbish about buying any 'not as popular PV' btw - if it works well for YOU and youre happy with it then thats all that counts.
Weclome to ECF btw :)

If you get a big battery mod, you don't need a PCC anymore.

See those Chucks over there on the left?
Those batteries (2400mAh) last me over 2 days.

But you can get much smaller ones that should last all day.

Just sayin'

Thank you very much for the recommendations, I was looking at the eGo a lot before you said anything, but I'm definitely considering the joye510 now, the eGo looks very slick and reliable, and the ~6 hr battery life would be nice, but I would really like a smaller unit to use with both a PCC and a PT (I don't mind a relatively shorter battery life as long as I can use a PCC, my Magma's works very well for me atm). A few questions about that though... What is the best place to get a joye510 where I could also get a PCC and a PT if at all? Are there multiple PT's I could use for a joye510? I've read a little about the amount of usb power most PT's utilize, and I'd like to make sure that the next one I purchase (I have a PT for my Magma, I use it often at home) is the right choice for the joye510. Maybe my magma's PT would be just fine to use for the joye? Also, have you seen any different colors for the joye? I don't really dig the stainless look. And... I assume that most 510 carts would be compatible with it? I can't stand the flat tip look. Thanks again, CaptJay, for the kind welcome and the advice, you've been a big help already.

Thank you, Col. Gaunt, classwife, and DC2, for the welcome.

DC2, thank you for the advice. I am quite adamant to the thought of using a big battery mod for the time being, though. Maybe it's naive of me, but atm I still highly value the 510 models' and PCC's similarity to my former habit of analogs. I will keep my eyes and ears open to the pros and cons of bigger battery mods, and I appreciate your input. Looking forward to learning more from yall! :)

For the eGo I have only seen black white and pink (lol) - a standard 510 (one that you can get a PCC for) has very short battery life(hence the PCC being useful lol) but Ive seen those in a myriad of colors - I prefer the black ones though. Be advised that they are all steel colored under that dyed body job - so if the paint (annodized paint, whatever they use lol) comes off you'll be left with the metal anyway.
All 510 parts are compatible with all other 510 parts (caveat: although this does apply to the 510 eGo, it does require a different chrager than a standard 510) whether they are genuine JOYE or not.
The bigger your PV is, the longer it will last without a recharge; it really depends what you want.

(Not sure about magama compatibility btw - I know someone else will know though)

welcome NJLG : ) - i'm still pretty new at this stuff myself, but as to this:

I've read a little about the amount of usb power most PT's utilize...
I posted a thread about this a while back, and got schooled (in a good way) by some of the more experienced users. These are the main things to look at as far as a PT for a Joye 510:

* There are 2 types...one has an inline rechargeable battery, the other is without battery. There are of course advantages to both...The one with battery will not (i think) lend itself to the "high voltage" vaping experience, because even though you may plug it into a high power source, the battery "absorbs" the incoming current, but still only sends out the low standard power to your PV. They work fine, and one advantage is you could even disconnect from your USB power source and continue to vape (for a while) from the inline battery. We won't get into the mental picture of you walking around with a cord hanging out of your mouth ;). (But) If you want that 'higher voltage' / 'modded' vape, then you might look into the one without the inline battery - these allow everything from your power source to reach your PV. If you choose this route, here's another issue to be aware of

* If you plug your PT into a USB port on your PC, it should work - my PT does (it is the 'non battery' type - straight cord). However, this also will not result in you getting that 'high voltage' vape that many are looking for. The USB port on a PC just doesn't put out enough juice (it puts out enough volts, but not enough amps). In order to get the full 'high octane' experience from your 510 PT, you would want to get a USB wall adapter > madvapes carries them...something like this:
2 amp AC to USB Adapter, ideal for Passthroughs

These adapters put out a full 2 Amps, which will kick up your vaping experience a notch or two. Just remember to be careful cuz you run a higher risk of frying an atty this way.

Here's a link to the posting where they explain all this stuff:
Article: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/tips-tricks/108490-if-you-use-usb-passthru-u-may-like.html

A couple of the pros added some very useful info to that thread. Good luck!

PS > on the volcano/joye 510 compatibility thing, I'm not sure, but here is an excerpt from a thread here at ECF:

So the 510 and volcano/blu attys are interchangeable? I recently got a volcano and if I can use the 510 usb passthrough, I'm gonna order one.

Yes it should-at least any Volcano attys I have screw right into the 510 batts/connectors.
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modders-forum/43236-blu-volcano-passthrough.html

so it sounds promising...

Hi again NJ. If you like a 510 I think you would love a Riva or eGo ecig. Here's a link to vaporjunction. The Riva : VaporJunction, E-Cigarette Supply
I have a Riva and can typically go 8 to 10 hours between charges. Some people say they get a day or more but they must not vape like I do. It's a solid, well made unit about the size of a smallish cigar. A regular ecig battery comes off the charger at about 3.2 volts and my Riva batteries read 4.1 volts off the charger. That extra volt makes a difference in vapor production. With that kind of charge life the PCC is not needed.
On that other subject, My son has 3 full length CDs out. He had a release party last saturday for the latest one from his outfit called "Smash Television". That's a duo he does with a guy who calls himself Leaf Erickson (short black guy, ironic eh?). He has a couple solo CDs too. The latest one is really good. If you PM me your address I'd be happy to get a couple CDs and send them to you. I think there are downloads available somewhere but I kinda like having the cases and artwork.

Thank you for the suggestion and link, mist. The Riva looks very interesting, and I really like the sound of that extra volt. The Riva looks very similar to the Janty eGo, no? In case you didn't read later posts in this thread, I've been trying to decide whether I want to go with an eGo (now I will consider the Riva too, in that area) or one of the many joye510 models. I'm heavily leaning towards the first white, completely cylindrical joye510 model with an LED that hopefully, I can order some cartos with and use with a PCC and PT. Right now, I'm thinking that I'd like to order a joye510 to replace my Magma once I find the right one and have enough $, and then order an eGo or Riva the next some I've got some extra cash. I'd definitely like to branch out a bit and try an eGo or Riva when possible, but for now I'm planning on getting something I'm familiar with and can use with a PCC and PT.
I would love to get my hands on some of your son's music! I appreciate the offer to send them to me. I will be moving to a new apartment here shortly, and when I do, I will pm you my new address. Thanks again for your advice, suggestions, and offer! Cheers.

Well NJ, this is quite a little dance we got goin' here:). I suggested cartos in your other thread. The adapter I suggested would even work with a regular 510 battery. The problem you will end up having with a regular 510 is the short charge life. When I was using regular batteries I had 2 chargers going constantly and 4 batteries rotating through them. It was time consuming and I had to think about my batteries all the time. I hated it.
I'm just trying to save you the $35.00 you would spend on a 510 kit when I'm pretty sure you'll have the same experience as I did.
The eGo and Riva are basically the same thing except the eGo has a 650 mAh battery and the Riva has a 750 mAh battery. I like the button on the Riva better too. It has a soft rubber button that has never stuck for me. The eGo has a hard plastic button that some people have complained about sticking. The eGo is a good PV though, don't get me wrong but I like the Riva better.
Shoot me your addy when you get settled in at the new diggs. That'll give me time to get the disks from my boy. He lives an hour away. We see each other quite a bit so I'll grab them next time I see him. They'll be here waitin'. It'd be cool to have a few copies out in the Pacific Northwest. Play them for your friends. :)

Thanks a lot! I saw your post about the cartos in my other thread, and I had actually been reading up on cartos and definitely want to switch to them. After looking up the Riva and watching some reviews, I'm starting to think I'll buy it first before bothering with a 510 and all the accessories. Is there a site you recommend I buy the Riva and necessary accessories that I could hopefully also get a pack of cartos and maybe some juice?

Yea about the blue foam, that was kinda an afterthought to my local purchase question because I'm sick of using these 3-hour max stock Magma carts and then having to drip into their easily-burnt wool material, and I'd like to have a quick fix to that inconvenience while I wait for my new PV and liquids that I'll be getting soon here :)

So that adapter you were recommending would be useful if I were to buy a 510 OR a Riva right? Should I get one too when I buy a Riva? And if so, what else should I buy for use with the adapter and why? I'm sorry, I'm kinda tripping over all this great info!

Thanks again, I will definitely give you a shout about my addy for those cd's, I really like having whole albums to rock all the way through, and I would be happy to support his music if I like it!

Edit: What is the shipping like from eastmall? I REALLY want to order my Riva tomorrow but if it's gonna take two weeks, I might be moved out by then D: !!! I hate my Magma TT~TT
