You want to become a vaper. Befriend your smoking and learn from your failures, and you are doing a great thing by seeking support and more information.

You can become a vaper, you are already vaping! Now, it's time to learn to be a non-smoker too.

Good luck, and any and all questions you have, keep asking. Everyone is rooting for you.

Anna
Wow! I have tears right now. I feel like such a failure and you are saying I'm not. You guys are amazing. I have new hope.........

Welcome Hopeful! You have received some really good advice, but I will chip in my two cents. I began vaping and joined ecf last August. I was 64 and had smoked 25+ cigarettes a day for 45+ years. I was able to cut my smoking in half immediately. Getting under 10 and then under 5 has been slow. Last September I bought a pocket notebook and began to write down the time of every cigarette before I lite up. In my case, that really helped. The other thing was building up a strong vaping habit - which can take time, getting the right devices and finding the right liquids. I am not one of those miracle vapers who has been able to quit completely. But I am down to less than a pack of cigarettes a month, and most days I don't smoke at all. If I do smoke, I don't worry about it as long as I am seeing progress - and I am seeing it. My first cigarette free day since I was a teenager was January 13, 2018. That was a miracle. Hang in there and keep showing up here. This community is extremely knowledgeable and supportive.
Unbelievable! Congratulations! OMG thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I am feeling so much better now.

So tgs, I smoke approximately 2 packs a day. Should I cut this immediately down tomorrow with one pack and vape along with it? 20 cigarettes to me is like 5 to others..... If I only did one pack for a couple of days, I would be soooo proud of myself!! Then I could go to 18? Is this the idea?

I know you say your ego style devices are satisfying you, but I don't believe they are, honestly, or you would have transitioned.

^ Not at all true.
Everyone is different - look at how many quit with a plain old 510 cigalike years back and how many struggle today even with sub ohm vaping.
Everyone is different and there is no race.

I am always happy with the hit and the vape that comes from using the equipment I own.

stols, Is my device an 'ego' style? Does this device have something to do with my ego? Or are pen styles called ego styles? Lol Just wondering. :p

If you are happy with how what you have works, stay with it for now.
Simply get a new liquid or two in a higher mg.

I don't see where you said exactly what you have - just pen style ?

For at least the first month of vaping, I was at 10-12. I was vaping 25mg. It took another 4-6 weeks for me to stay consistently under 10. Then the goal became 5, less than 5 etc., I gave up trying to force the issue early on. Spent my energy getting my vaping organized. Everybody has a style of vaping they are comfortable with. Turns out mine is low wattage chain vaping! lol In the last few months, I have reduced the nic level as well - but don't worry about that now. It takes time and everyone is different. Good luck and keep coming back.

I have 5 e-cigs that I absolutely love because they look exactly like my real cig but I also understand this could be a hindrance because of the association with my real cigarettes. But I really do love them and I love the hit and they make lots of smoke. I also have 2 pens that are also quite nice. They are a bit stronger but I think I can get used to it. I sold 3 others that were too big and heavy for me and much too strong. I have spent a fortune on equipment so I'd love to stick to what I have right now because of the money. I am definitely thinking the increase in the strength of the juice might greatly help... even if it's all in my head, I'll feel like I am getting more nicotine.:)

Oh dear, I am such an addict!! :-x

Thank you all again so much!

You're in excellent company !

See if your vape store will let you try out some different strengths. Try some 18 and some 24.
Your body will tell you if it's too strong.

Sincerely, Hopeful64
Welcome Hopeful64, your not alone on this situation. Many of us were on the fence for a time before we completety put down the nasty tobacco sticks and switched to vaping. I can only tell you from my experience that I have been vaping for 5 years now, but the the first year was a bit difficult to make the switch because like you I started out with the Ego pen/stick devices but I was watching all these good people on YouTube who were using advanced devices ( mods & rda's) and building there own coils and wicking them. I really was attracted to that because I'm a bit of a hobbyist so I tried it more out of curiosity to see if there was a difference....and it was like night to day ! I made the switch to vaping 100% when I went advanced. Same as you it felt way strong but by asking many questions and getting advice from vapers online and at my local brick and mortar you find the answers from honest people sharing they're experience. You just have to make adjustment to your nicotine levels and for some the VG/PG ratio, power level and if you prefer to sub ohm or not. Its just a little tinkering until you find your sweet spot and most importantly you'll have to pay attention to battery safety and ohms laws.
When I was on the underpowered (for me) stick devices I was using 24mg of nicotine in my eliquid. When i went advanced using an rda I went from 24mg to 18mg to 12mg of nicotine in less than 2 weeks and after 6 months I was down to 6mg and that's where I'm still at now and very satisfied. I don't even care to change it any lower but I always can if I choose
If we can do it so can you, even if you don't wanna go the advanced root. But if you choose to just always ask questions along the way of anything your not sure of. You can do this sister, I don't know you but I believe in you!!!! You have thousands of vaper's that will support and help you through.
I wish you well, sister.

Like many have said already it all about progress. Your never a failure, change is a hard thing to do for some, especially me. If you veer off course you get right back up and try again and as many times as you need to.

I am overwhelmed by the love in this community. I cannot thank you enough. I feel so all alone in this. All my friends and acquaintances are non-smokers. Many of my friends quit over the years with nothing! Some are vapers now and the few I have talked to made the switch-over in a day and they are now successful vapors and I always wondered WHY can't I do the same as they??? What is wrong with me? Why can't I get it? They are breaking me financially, causing me to be out of breath, making my nice house smell like a dirty ashtray and I am looked on by the world as a failure.

I'm not having a pity party, I just don't understand why I can't be successful? When vaping first came out, I was so excited and thought for positive sure that this was going to be my savior! One of my acquaintances who is a vapor now, told me the other day that she saved $2,000. within a couple of months and paid off a credit card! I want that to be me!!

So tomorrow, I will go get the higher strength vape juice and begin to eliminate some real cigarettes tomorrow. I have already made my mind up that I am going to vape for the first 10 minutes when I wake up in the morning. Thank you for that suggestion.
And thanks to all of you who took the time out to respond to me. I have a new hope tonight. I will check back in tomorrow. I want to be accountable and you guys are the only support I have and I am so grateful for that tonight.

((hugs)) to all of you.

Hello @Hopeful64 and a big welcome to ECF! I wish you the very best on your vaping journey. I too smoked for 38 years and did not find the transition to vaping easy. I certainly was not one of the lucky ones who stopped smoking straight away! I began vaping in September 17 and only recently stopped smoking completely. My journey was much like @tgs3 - and we began around the same time!

Just don't be too hard on yourself. You will have good days and not so good days. Something I did, and still do (time permitting) is check in here every day. You will make friends here, receive heaps of support, have a laugh and learn all you need to about vaping.
I am looking forward to hearing how you are going with your vaping. Buy yourself some yummy eliquids (higher nicotine :)) and enjoy!

I think it is time for this pearl of wisdom. somone here told me this and i have seen it said a few times now but i think it is the most important bit of information to get you in the right mindset.

Giving up isn't about the ones you do smoke. it is about the ones you don't smoke.

Every cig you dont have is a small victory. If you do have one then don't beat yourself up about it. I am a bit broke at the moment. I spent to much on my new mod and didnt plan in for juice. So last saturday i had a cig because i got stressed my new juice hadnt arrived. It tasted horrible. and when i got inside (i smoke in the garden) My juice was waiting for me on the door mat :) Yeah i felt annoyed but things happen. Sunday no cigs WIN! Monday something happened and i got very stressed and anxious so i had about 4 cigs. I didn't let it get me down though, things happen, stress is nasty but i don't let it get me down if i do have a smoke. Because i know i have had a lot fewer than i normally would have. Focus on the positives :)

@classwife , I dual used for years using those types of setups. It was easier to quit (for me) when I moved to a robust setup. However, you are correct that many did quit, and perhaps upping nic is the first step. Certainly, readiness was the most important thing, but I did find some more robust setups helpful.

@Hopeful64 , here are some links for WTA:

I did gain some weight when I quit but I had to actively work at it and eat more. The good news, non-smoking food is the BOMB. I was pretty underweight when I got here due to 18 months of pneumonia.

I really had to eat more. Most folk don't gain huge amounts of weight if vaping. Nicotine is a stimulant, and you are still inhaling it. You may actually lose weight if you become healthy enough to start exercising once you are able to breathe better and etc. Vaping also satisfies the "absent munching" effect due to the hand to mouth and inhalation part.

I wouldn't worry about that just now. If you are the rare person who does gain a bit of weight, well most things tend t level off, but I'd be quite surprised if you gained a ton of weight unless you were really trying and etc.

You guys are so awesome! I promise as soon as I get all my errands done, I will read, over and over again all these wonderful suggestions above. You guys taking the time to write to me will not go unnoticed but all reponces will be studied!

I Wanted to give you an update on this morning so far. As suggested, I vaped for 10 minutes as soon as I woke up (and let me tell you, I watched the clock to have my first real cigarette.Lol) But I did it and surprisingly enough, I have only smoked 5 cigarettes and it is now noon!!!

I would have normally smoked at least 15 because as I stated, I am a 2 pack day smoker, so I am allowing myself only 1 pack today which means for me, this alone will cut my smoking down in half. So I have 15 left in the package. Off to do some errands...and the first one is to the Vapor store to get the higher nicotine juice!

I can't believe I am actually making an effort again!! All thanks to all of you!! I'll check in later. Big ((hugs)) to every one of you today!

    Well done Hopeful :D

I used to chain smoke like crazy when I first woke up. It was giving up those smokes that really really put me off quitting ;) But once I was using the right strength nicotine and vaping gear I liked using, I got there.

Just keep delaying each smoke as long as you can - while vaping your head off during that time. Also use Batitudes idea of only smoking half a smoke at a time.

    Welcome and glad you joined.
Since vaping is totally scalable, the choice you have can be overwhelming. The main thing to remember is, part of vaping is all about you the vaper, being in control and the freedom to fix/tailor any aspect of vaping you feel you need to improve upon. Feel free to post your questions and someone may point you to the best direction. The more you know about vaping, the more likely you will become successful.

Also @Hopeful64, when you get a chance, have a look at this thread:
Still smoking support and chat thread
It has been going for many years, but I think you will find it helpful...I know I did...and still do.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart! The welcome was overwhelming! I think I will switch over to this thread because it would be a great place to discuss the everyday struggles with smoking. Thank you to @Possum64 for the great suggestion. I've let them know I am coming to join them!! Lol

I just wanted to update you and let you know how I ended my first day. I got the higher nicotine juice this morning and refilled all my equipment. So I just started today as most of you know. 2 pack smoker (at least 40 cigs a day) opened only one pack this morning and still have 2 left in the pack!! 40 cigarettes a day down to 18 today and a whole lot of vaping! I am real 'antsy' right now and could chain smoke about 5 in a row (as a reward, Lol) so I think I will go to bed right now. So happy to have found this place! I'm so excited!! I have hope for the first time ever!

Thank you all ever so much! ((hugs))

Awwwww! Look at you! Well done on your first day. That is an amazing feat.
I am so glad you are excited - With your mindset the way it is at the moment you are going to do really well. Be gentle with yourself, take your time, and if you have a bad day, don't dwell on it - just start fresh the next day.
