Hi Folks, Advice please.

First of all let me say hi to you all. I am basically a boring old fart that has been on the vape for 9 Month. Havent touched a ciggy since I picked my vape up. I have just moved from Smok tank and coils and making my first forays into rebuildable. Am needing advice please.

Have bought a Wotofo Serpent SMM tank that I have fitted to a Smok Procolour 225w Mod.

Have followed the directions on the youtube video. Twice I have fitted a Fused Clapton Coil 0.34ohm 3mm (on my Smok mod it reads as 0.196ohm). Wicked it as per video. I am firing at 50w in Watt mode on my Smok. I am using a King of Vapes juice which I usually get 3k puffs from my previous baby beast tank.

When I smoke my serpent I am only getting a few hours before there is a burnt taste. What am I doing wrong?

50w is likely way too high. You want the low end of what produces vapor not the high end. I’ve got a .4 ohm coil I fire at 22w and a .25ohm coil I fire at 30w for example. I would start at 20w and slowly work my way up till it works well

Oh and welcome to the forum btw :)

Welcome to the forum, I’m new here too. Kudos for starting to build your coils! I just recently started building mine and even with an ohmmeter there is still some variance in resistance reading. A lot of times your reading will be based on the temperature of your coil, and that may be where the confusion is coming from.

As for the burning that’s probably the power, as RBA atomizers are much more efficient at using power as well as the juice and nicotine content. I am in the same shoes as you, when I moved to RBA I had to actually lower my power and nicotine because the nicotine buzz got extremely powerful, I had to cut my nicotine content in half and reduce my power to about 30%. It’s amazing what such a build can do with 30W or so. I’m assuming that you’re not into the cloud chasing, thus, like the vapers before me, I’d recommend dropping the power and only calibrating your resistance when the coil is at room temperature, basically let it cool off after you dry burn it, and then set or measure the resistance.

Happy vaping!

Hi and welcome! A couple of things to look at. Reducing the wattage and opening the air is all solid advice. There are two other issues worth discussing.

First, how do you know the coil is a 0.34 ohm coil if it reads 0.19 ohm on the mod? I ask because fluctuating ohms likely means your coil might not be held in as well as it should. Double check everything is tightened down properly.

Second, keep working on your wicking. Proper wicking is an art and requires some practice to get right. 90% of all RTA problems can be laid at the feet of your wicking rather than hardware issues.

Finally, what type of juice do you vape? Higher VG juice is harder to wick well due to the high viscosity and if you chain vape you may get ahead of the ability of your wicking being able to keep up with use.

I have the same tank and think it's a fine choice for vaping. A bit of fiddling around should get you to a point of excellent performance.

Watching some videos can really help. I know it seems counterintuitive that "more wick" would actually result in dry hits, but it completely can. If your wick isn't well placed, and if you don't thin and trim the tails enough, they can have a harder time getting saturated as too much wick chokes the coils. Wattage and airflow play a role as well.

I use rayon, and haven't looked back from it. Some people dislike it but I find it to be a much more "forgiving" wicking material and if you do want higher wattage, it may well "hold up" better than cotton. Unlike cotton rayon shrinks when wet, so if you tend to want to overstuff your wick (I do have that tendency) using rayon can help, although you still need to be wicking correctly.

There is a long thread on rayon on the boards that you could search for if you decide to try it. Usually people try it and prefer cotton, or try it and become a rayon convert. I am of the latter persuasion. I will say, even with rayon, you still need to learn to wick correctly for both your tank and build so watching some video reviews of your tank may help quite a bit.

Best of luck,

Anna

I have the SMM and I can tell you that if the wick is too long it doesn't work right. There is that juice well and it seems to me that the wicking should go all the way down and touch the bottom of the well, but if it does, I get dry hits. If I shorten up the wick I do not get dry hits. Makes no sense but that's the way its' been for me.
