Good day people!
I am ActionCow, and been vaping for a couple of years. Lately I have changed to SS316L coils with TC enabled. Although it looks like it is working fine, temperature protect does kick in, I have noticed that my temperature is jumping up and down, and the coils resistances are not being read intermittently, and leaves a blank space in device monitor (NFE Toolbox).
Any one of you have encountered this problem?
My setup is the following:
Evic VTwo Mini with latest ArcticFox firmware (171114)
VandyVape Kylin RTA
SS316L 26ga DUAL coil 10 wraps and 0.7 ohm each (0.4ohm total as read by the MOD, which goes up to 0.53 when reaching 235 Celsius; 455F)
I left the co efficiency at the default value for ArcticFox SS316L as Coil Wizard said the same values.

What I have tried so far:
Tried locking the resistance, and unlocking, same issue
Tried single coil, same issue
Tried spaced coils, and non-spaced coils, same issue
Tried unscrewing the 510 connector a bit, and tightening it, same issue
Tightened the coil clamps, disassembled the thing, reassembled the thing, same issue :D

I cannot link a picture yet sadly, but hoping this is enough information so you can identify if you had the same issue.

Thank you very much in advance!

I’m afraid I haven’t a clue about your issue, but likely someone will. Welcome to the forum though :)
Thanks! I am hoping for someone as well, as I am afraid to vape it with this issue :/ I have seen so nice graphs of proper TC control. I am also afraid of using a different box mod, because I have no idea if they will end their firmware upgrades or not. It seems ArcticFox is going strong still :)

have a couple of quick questions, if you run said coils in wattage mode does the resistance bounce?
second, are you running the mod in stainless steel mode or tcr mode?
third, where did you get your SS, is it temco or some repacked/rebranded vape wire?

also, do you have another device to check things out on? just in case its an internal issue with the mod.

Dear,
Thanks for the reply. In wattage mode, the resistance slowly climbs (because it is SS) and is constantly readable.
I am running the device in SS316 mode, tried it in [TFR]SS316L. Have not tried TCR yet.
Ive got my wire at a local supplier (in Hungary), it says on the package: Geek Vape SS316L 26ga 30ft
I only have an iStick30 as a different mod, but I am scared to use it as it is already rusted :D

Thanks in advance!

Edit: In TC mode it is not the resistance that is bouncing, but the temperature seems to drop to 21 then pop up high to 400, and at that point, resistance is not readable.

I have tried TCR set to 88, and I have some results with it. Firstly, temp control goes about 80C (176F) higher than the set temperature, resistance reading is suddenly unavailable for a moment, then temp control kicks in until the coil reaches the desired temperature (cools down that is), and when it reached it, the temperature starts to look like a saw wave.

did some "quick" calculation based on the wire and you should be able to get a pretty good vape, the temp protect is just that, its protecting you coil from exceeding the temp you have set. i use it on some of my single coil setups to keep my cotton from burning. i do have to ask, with the original settings you had, was the vape satisfying? if it is, i would go back to them and enjoy. if not then we look at alternative options for you to tweak on the software.

Dear,
Thank you very much! The vape was sort of okay, the flavor was not phenomenal as most people claim it is, and vapor production was weak. However I think that was mainly because of the poor wicking, as I did finish on a very dry hit, because I packed the cotton too tight, and it couldn't re wick fast enough. I am looking for a similar vapor effect than a shisha or hookah with not super strong flavor, but distinguishable.

Thank you in advance!

With spaced coils I get the required satisfactory results, however it seems like it is not wicking fast enough. After a 3 second draw, I start to feel the taste of the cotton. I will play around with my wicking, but it seems like TC is working as intended, and the sawwaves are created because the temperature is not monitored at those sections. However it is behaving as needed. Thank you very much for your very useful assistance!

hmmm...
Sounds like too much cotton.
What did you use before you got the Evic and the Kylin? Did you achieve the shisha/hookah experience with the old equipment?
What nicotine level are you using?

Cheers

It does sound like too much cotton to me too, I had that exp with TC once. Also, be sure to trim your tails and thin them out well if you rewick. It's kind of a delicate balance making sure things aren't leaking but you are still getting good wicking. It would be helpful to know more about your juice as well.

Before the Evic, I used an eLeaf iStick30, I mainly changed to Evic, because of the replaceable battery. I used and currently use a Kanger subtank mini rba, which is now a sort of backup. I did have a typhoon copy which I hated, so I quickly gave up on using that. I never truly achieved the required result. I got the same clouds, but barely any taste, I got more taste but less clouds as well, it has been ups and downs. I settled at the subtanks moderate amount of vapor and moderate amount of flavor. I use 6mg liquids.
The current cotton is not wicking as much as it should either, and it is not snug in the coil, it is very easily movable. The liquid is just not climbing it, I can apply a couple of drops at the top and it sucks it in easily. I am using Cotton Bacon.

My juice is branded Maximum Smoke, 30%PG and 70%VG.

You may wish to try rayon I think it tastes better and it's so much easier to manipulate and wick. You shouldn't be having huge problems on that ratio. There is a huge thread on Rayon wick here you may want to check out, wicks last longer without burning/getting gunky, too. It's also just so much easier to handle (IMO).

Just a thought.

Good luck,

Anna

Dear Anna,
thank you a bunch! Sadly Rayon is not available in my country (because reasons) and I have tried different types of cotton, and for some reason I have not found the perfect one yet. I even tried glass fiber in one of my earlier tanks, and it was horrendous :D I might just forget RTAs and start using RDAs.
But first, I shall procure a million types of cotton, and test them ALL! :D
