Hi Alex, and welcome to the ECF :)

What is the best practice for buying something off of the classifieds without getting scammed? Currently interested in an item but the poster doesn’t have any rating. Just curious….thanks.

The ratings system is no longer in use. Very long story.

Generally, if it's a listing from a longtime member then you are safe.

Otherwise, ask them for vouches (same as you would do on FB).

What item are you interested in?

This one…..

That person is very new to the ECF.

No messages on the forum. Was last logged in on Dec 9. I have my doubts that he will be back.

If you are still interested, I would post a reply in the listing expressing your interest AND ask for ECF vouches. If he provides any, follow-up with the vouches.

If he/she can't provide any, then walk away.

Well, here is my obligatory new member post….so hi everybody and Merry Christmas !! Registration was a little weird, had to fill out the same form 3 times before it went through….weird.
TLDNR: Some computer debug dorkery you may not care about:

That’s unusual AFAIK. Not one I’ve heard before at this site. Most likely suspect would be machine problems though they would not be limited to just the one site. Unusual browser maybe? Other machine problems? Another possible is poor connectivity somewhere in the internet chain between your machine and the server that powers the forum. This would be a “most places on the internet” thing. Most commonly before the data enters the backbone. Are things close to you physically producing high ping? Almost as high as something physically very far away from you (like in another country)? High ping can be lots of malformed packets. If there’s wireless involved there are numerous sometimes temporary things that affect radio. Anything from solar flares to someone moving a metal bookend, Though none of those is common unless one is close to or beyond the normal range limit which varies according to local ambient radio noise on that band. It can be an issue with wifi if there are lots of neighbors also using wireless.
There is other less common client side stuff too.

I can’t speak to server side stuff, though it’s generally much less common.

Welcome fellow Kubrick fan. Merry Christmas to you as well.

I had the same thing happen. Couldn't get it to work with Firefox at all (it would just refresh the page after submitting), so I had to use Vivaldi. Figured it was Ublock or a cookie setting so I didn't report it. Must be a larger issue than I thought.

TLDNR: more computer wankery and supposition

There has been a movement lately where chrome and chromesque browsers like Microsoft edge are taking over. For a long time the two browsers were Firefox and Microsoft explorer. When Google chrome came out it basically had to ape one of the two. Not hard as Firefox was open source. When edge came out, though which is basically chrome with the data spiders going to Microsoft instead, website makers now had four browsers, but only budget to test two. They often picked just edge and chrome. Because edge and chrome are really really similar coding has gotten weirder and Firefox not only now has to basically ape chrome, but chrome can go even farther from standards and still work. As a result Firefox is having a harder time and because Google is a private company an does NOT generally open source their stuff it is also harder for Firefox to keep up with chrome than for chrome to keep up with Firefox. So the internet is being privatized and web coding is following standards even less closely. When Firefox is finally destroyed Google will have only Safari to deal with. A duopoly. If history is a guide things will get ugly fast. I doubt they’ll be free anymore for one thing. I will use Firefox myself as long as I can. It’s currently the cheapest browser (the other ones you pay for too, but with things other than money. Some websites too. They all charge the same-everything.) I’m even doing it on iPhone. I consider Safari less expensive than either chrome or edge but it’s not really free either. I’m not sure how long that will be though. Months? Years? I guess it’s not free either for me either because I donate to Mozilla to try to help slow things down, but it’s still cheaper than Safari even with the donations. When it dies though I would be unsurprised if they charged you monthly to effectively rummage through your underwear drawer and sell everything they can.

Well I don’t know what was going on with the registration yesterday. I am using a iPhone with Safari and I filled the form out twice initially and when I hit the register button the page refreshed and the register button counted down from 3 seconds or so. Then I tried “register with Google account” twice and got a “oops, there’s an error” message. I thought wtf because I’m a member of many forums , so I tried twice more with filling out the form manually and finally got it to go through. I’m just glad I finally got in.

Ok, so that’s two. Server side gets more likely with each one. The “oops there’s an error” thing happens here a lot though.

Nor do I. As long as you succeeded though I suspect nothing will/can be done. Coders are expensive and the forum is old (which is a good thing imho) which means it will probably need a real one.
(P.s. I am not a real one, or even a fake one, or I’d try and help. I’m even a lousy script kiddie)

So it no longer has stuff going back to the beginning?
Perhaps this is a wording issue. The thing to my knowledge has been around almost as long as vaping. Before vaping was even a word. I remember the term being bandied about as a possible descriptor. It may have even been invented here. This means their data file is massive. So massive it could have problems just because it’s big and some of the data was created so long ago that it will in a few years reach the point that it’s been around longer than the lives of some of its members. There may be fairly subtle cruft that needs poking through. There may for instance be onion and hairball issues. There have likely been a LOT of updates. And more than one complete rewrite.
I remember visiting a forum once called .................. that HAD to be newer than this site. Why? Because it was called ................... This site amongst other things is a living and searchable history of all the .... big tobacco has pulled since they noticed it. That imho alone is incredibly valuable.
