Hmm, is mapp gas going to far for oxidizing the wick?

So, I have a GGTS (clone) on the way, so I decided to bite the bullet and get a dud also. I am fairly mechanically inclined (and have been rebuilding vivi heads with some success) plus . . . it'll look cool and drag me even farther away from the look of analogs.

So my question for the experts, is, would a mapp gas be too hot for oxidizing the wick, and should I just grab a couple butane cylinders?

Yes that's totally overkill. There is no need to go to such lengths. Personally I use a Bic lighter to oxidize my wicks and it works fine. I torch the rolled mesh once for a few seconds, until it glows red. Then I wrap a coil and dry burn it a few times to burn out the shorts. I have zero problems with my coils, they last weeks.

In my opinion covering your mesh with black soot is counterproductive. All you need is a thin film of discoloration on the steel. The proper color for an oxidized mesh is brown, not black.

Also, in my experience, quenching does nothing. The cigarette paper trick doesn't help either. It's just superstition. The real trick to building a coil is your dry burning technique. Use short pulses and don't let it get too hot. A red wire will burn through shorts. A yellow wire will cut through the steel and cause additional shorts.
