Watkins Extracts And Flavorings : Independent Watkins Associate Melody Thacker

What is the Difference Between an Extract and a Flavor?

I often get asked, "What's the difference between extracts and a flavoring?" The names are often used interchangeably however, an extract is generally made from a natural ingredient, for example we have Pure Lemon Extract from made from lemon oil and Pure Vanilla Extract made from real vanilla beans. Pure extracts can have a more limited shelf life and should be stored in a cool, dark cupboard. A flavoring is usually artifically flavored, therefore it's more stable and has a longer shelf life. Watkins offers you both artificial flavors and pure extracts so you can choose the one that's right for you. The quality and care Watkins takes in the manufaturing process ensures you that the bottle of extract you buy today, will be just as good six months or several years from now.

Watkins All Natural Pure Extracts

These fat-free liquid extracts are economical to use as they are concentrated and add a full, rich true-to-life flavor to a variety of dishes, baked goods and beverages. These all-natural extracts do not contain any artificial coloring and are made from all-natural oils. Available in a 2 oz plastic tinted bottle which protects it from light.

So it sounds like their Extracts are Oil Based Flavorings.

Here's My Opinion.

I don't think Oil Based Flavorings should be Vaped. The Jury is Out on the Health Risks involved with using ANY Oil Based Flavorings.

When they talk about oils in extracts they're usually essential oils- and a lot different than regular oils like olive, or canola. Essential oils are volatile, and evaporate pretty easily. It's probably not going to be a great vape, but I don't think it will kill you either. A few DIY folks use essential oils in their blends...and I'm guessing a few of the commercial blends use them as well.

Zoid's got the right of this. Go with the flow and just go with the brands everyone else uses (Capella's, The Perfumer's Apprentice, Flavourart - and also Lorann but they use oil so I'd avoid them too). The Perfumer's Apprentice has the best prices but their flavors are very hit and miss. A few are awesome, and in my experience most are barely passable or completely unvapeable. If you want to try TPA (because they are so inexpensive) make sure to visit the DIY section of this forum and get some direct recipes from there and stick with that. Those are proven flavors. If you go picking at random you may be disappointed. I particularly hated ALL their tobacco flavors.
