Actually, the 18350 is a much stronger battery, which should give you better contact. And the higher the mAh rating the better.
Now, I'm not sure how old your Mini is, but for the past year, I've changed the circuitry to make it much... much more sensitive. Your skin maybe a little too dry. See, the negative of the power travels through your skin to the sensor to activate the Saber. People that have very dry skin may have problems activating the older editions.

The mini that I have I bought from Tat_skull. He said it was the first Mini (black) to have the racing stripes. if that helps to judge the age of the mod. Can this be retrofitted with the updated circuitry to make it more user friendly? This is would like to consider. If that works out I would like to get more styles.

Yes, that one has some age to it, and has the old circuitry. Unfortunately, once a Saber is made, the electronics can not be changed due to the heat conductive epoxy I use to totally seal everything inside.
With the new circuitry, I haven't had hardly any complaints about it being difficult to activate. I've pushed the sensitivity allowed by law! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
