Today these two batteries are testing at around 4.84 which is still more than they ought. Haven't blown up yet though. I believe they're unprotected.

If that's fresh off the charger you might want to look into a better charger if you have any battery life problems. Certainly would make it a point not to leave them on the charger if they are getting pushed that high without the protection circuit. From what I read even the 4.2V that they are designed for is pushing the limit or at least the envelope for long life of battery, but given the duty cycle we put batteries through might not help much to stop short of the top recommended voltage.

Of course investing in a charger that lets me control how fast and how high the batteries get charged will take some evidence that I can get a much longer life out of a battery than I do now. I'm betting that by going big (1600 mAh) I'll be less likely to fully cycle batteries with normal use and wont have to charge overnight to get back to full charge every time.

I'm still curious about the ??? 8.4 and 9.9 ??? was that with them in series or just an odd one time reading?

Those were the readings the first time I tested them. I'm pretty sure I turned the dial to '20' (3 clicks to the left). But strangely I got a much lower reading the next time I tested them. I'll try to remember to test them again tomorrow and post here the reading I get.

I found that if I left the leads on the battery ends, the number kept increasing at least a tenth every 5 seconds or so. I was just trying to get a steady reading but instead, it kept rising.

Just checking, but are you removing them from the charger prior to testing them? A plausible explanation... maybe you're multi meter is haunted :)

Sorry... I just don't know wassup with your results... but it sounds like they may be overcharged?
