How Do You Choose the Right Device?

    Hi everyone,

I'm helping a friend who's just getting started with vaping, and we were wondering — what’s the best way for a beginner to pick their first device?

There are so many options out there: pods, disposables, mods, refillables, MTL vs DTL… It can feel overwhelming if you’ve never vaped before.

A few questions that came up:

    • Is it better to start with something like a Vaporesso XROS or Uwell Caliburn?
    • Should new users avoid sub-ohm at the beginning?
    • How important is nicotine strength vs. device type for that initial transition?

Would love to hear your suggestions — whether you're a long-time vaper or just recently made the switch. What worked for you in the beginning?

Welcome aboard. A couple of concerns that might help others give you advice: Is he a current or former smoker and how many cigarettes did he smoke per day? Are his intentions to consume nicotine or produce large smoke clouds? Best of luck.

Pods aimed at MTL typically use 50 mg /ml nic‑salt, five quick puffs usually satisfy cravings for me.

Sub‑ohm DTL tanks run commonly 3 mg/ml freebase. Because they vaporise more liquid per pull. If that feels weak or strong, you can always adjust or puff more: 6 mg freebase or 12 mg salt, for myself i don't really feel strong nic effect from it, it feels like you just absorb nicotine slowly, while the pod make it peak fast, so you notice the effects, but this is my own opinion.
And with DTL you will be making huge clouds, that won't go unnoticed. I was smoking at my car one time and some guy came worried thinking there was something burning inside the vehicle.

I've been vaping 6-10mg in my subohm, but you should start at 3 to test because everyone is different.
Oh, for freebase, anything higher than 4mg will have a strong thoathhit, while 3 is confortable.

My own progress changing from hookah to vape came after several misses. Disposables, Caliburn and XROS never kept me away from hookah, but a sub‑ohm setup finally did. A basic 510 mod such as the Voopoo Drag 5 i got lets you control the wattage for MTL or push higher for DTL then you can just swap the atomiser.
Always start with pre‑made coils, rebuildable decks are great once you enjoy the vape, not before, wicking can frustrate beginners. If i didn't got a Pnp X as part of the voopoo kit i would probaly have walked away from vaping trying to wick the zeus mesh without ever doing anything similar before.
After you learn it is extremely easy, but without reference it is frustrating.

So if you get something similar, they are all almost the same at this price range. You just need something with 510 changable atomizer and eletronic wattage control (stay away from mechanical) then you can test around atomizer if needed, something with 80w limit would already be enough.

Unless the minimalist look from pods like the XROS are a important thing for you.
Or you don't want to spend right now.
But i would start with a disposable if i was thinking about buying a POD.
Sadly there are really few options of diposable that you can try for a DTL feeling, but they exist.

I guess i would always recommend trying a disposable, getting a "pod mod combo like thelema urban or drag x2" or a full mod. But i don't think i would be recommending anyone to start vaping in the end.

Both nic strength and style of vaping are equally important imo, at least it was for me. If have other friends that vape it would help to give him a spare drip tip to use and try a variety of draws. MTL just frustrated me but then dl tanks came on the market and I never looked back. I would advise a versatile cheap pod kit with adjustable air flow. If your friend is a heavy smoker 12-18mg juice is a good starting point.

Another thing may be that whatever device you all decide on to try first, and maybe last, should be adjustable in both the airflow and power arenas. Good luck, and tell your friend Congrats.
