How do you clean a Riva 510 manual battery?

I read a post that you should clean a battery about once a week. Is this correct? What do you use to clean the threads on the battery? Should you clean the threads on the charger as well?

I use 91% isopropyl alcohol applied with a q-tip. Dip one end of the q-tip into the iso, gently trace the threads and battery connection, use dry end of q-tip, trace as before (will see black residue on q-tip). Repeat until no residue is present. If battery is kept clean, the charger should not need cleaning; should the charger need cleaning - unplug charger and use same procedure.
