My first mod and currently only mod is the Zelos. I'm interested in the sub ohm lower wattage world of DL vaping. My current daily driver is the Smok TFV8 Baby which most all coils seem to be just fine in the 30-50 watt range. For me nothing past 40 Watts and it's to hot or a big throat hit that's uncomfortable.

My question, at vape shops or my co workers setups I never seem to ever get a harsh throat hit on 0, 3 or 6mg on various tanks. I sometimes am getting a harsh throat hit on my Smok tank if I pull to long. My buddy has the same tank and fires about 5 watts higher than me and I can chuk on that thing without ever getting a throat hit. He has a older Smok mod. Also uses the same strength nicotine. I had a Nautilus 2 I used prior and same thing, harsh throat hits even with a 3mg liquid.

So on normal wattage settings is the mod the possibility. Like are all mods the same on wattage mode. If I grab 2 random mods at 40 Watts and swap the same tank back and forth. Should the heat, pull, taste, etc be exactly the same?

I'm new to vaping. So far in the past 3-4 weeks since starting vaping I've spent almost $200 on juice, coils, mod, tanks and I don't wanna keep buying stuff to not be happy. I just don't want harsh throat hits, unless all my friends are lying about there nic strength and that's the whole issue but I doubt it.

Let me know if I should try another mod with my tank. Wasn't sure if the mods fire coils different on normal wattage settings.

Yes you should try other mods... no 2 mods hit exactly the same. No atty hits the same on every mod...... even the same atty on 2 identicle mods at identicle settings will feel or taste slightly different....
Why? I don't know...... Why do bumble bees fly?

Best mod IMO is the one you like best at the price you want to pay... Beyond that I like a regulated mod to be at least 2x more powerful than I need.. for both regulated and UNREGULATED... if to be used at 40watts or more 2 batteries or more.....

In the best of all worlds, 40W would be 40W. Unfortunately, not all boards behave the same, especially with inexpensive mods. Things like accuracy in resistance, internal resistance, board temperatures, slightly differently designed circuits can make for some variation from one mod to another at the same power setting with the same atty.

Having said that, maybe I have a very poorly developed sense of the nuances in vaping, but 40W vapes like 40W to me from one box to another. However, differences become way more apparent when using stuff like temp control. Then brand variation will have a pretty big impact in performance.

Thanks for the replies guys, definitely helpful.

This is my issue. Vaping in my city is evidently big. Within a 1 mile radius of where I live, I have 4 vape shops alone. The problem I've seen is everyone carries limited amount of stuff and seem to only carry the older popular stuff. Example shop didn't know there was a Crown 3, Smok spirals, or even have Atlantis Evo or anything. The typical original Cleito, the 2015 Smok stuff, etc. So I haven't found that vape shop yet to be helpful.

Since this thread, I learned to adjust my draw, etc to make my mod and tank work together to my liking. My problem is I have a much longer delay than I want at initial fire. I have to pull really hard with half air to get a good hit that won't give me a harsh throat hit. I'm not entirely comfortable in this tactic so I guess I'll have to dig into research more mods.

If I have to get a DNA chip mod to be happy I will. Just not ready to throw out $100-$200 yet.

Not to keep blabbering but I'm not running any higher than 38 watts now and my next tank will be the spiral which is a lower watts flavor type sub ohm tank. So I don't have to get a 250 watt mod.

 LOL, just one look at my profile image and you can see that I've tried my share of mods and tanks over 2yrs of vaping. (gosh that image is so outdated)

With so many mods and tanks out there in the wild finding the perfect tank and mod to marry to it sometimes seems like hunting a needle in a haystack.

Thankfully most of this stuff is fairly inexpensive and I figure that as long as I'm spending LESS than I did on smoking then I'm saving money.

Yes, I just received my Zelos and noticed a slow ramp-up. I did also notice that the resistance jumps around but seems more accurate overall than my Istick. If it's checking the resistance that often, that's great. Or it's a flaky chip or connection issues.

I noticed resistance jumping around using Aspire Nautilus 2 coils but on the Smok baby beast it always stays at .43 to .44. So I do think the tank is accurate just depending on the coils.

It's very wierd but now I know longer have a slow ramp up, which is wierd. I'm on the same Smok 0.4 ohm coil. I don't know if the coil wasn't 100% perfectly broken in until a few days out or if the Zelos Mod needed 4 weeks to break in. Since making my original OP the Zelos is firing my Smok TFV8 coil perfectly and fast. Even long draws have no harshness. I've been using the same email juice and same wattage the whole time. So I don't know, I'm writing it up as a long break for 1 or the other.

PS I now love the Zelos for a 50 watt mod. Battery life at 38 watts running 4-6 ml a day through it is getting days of battery life. I don't know about max life. I charge every 48 hours and battery doesn't even seem to be half dead. In my opinion for a man with long fingers, it's almost to small of a mod. Like so small I feel like it's gonna slip out of my hands. I'm now on a quest for a new tank that will last all day. The Smok isn't making it half a day on tank

I just got the Zelos kit today. Definitely noticing a softer ramp up compared to some of my other mods. Some mods are like that. I think you might have been getting harshness because you're sucking in a lot of air while it ramps up. The Baby Beast is a fairly airy tank, so that plus the slow ramp up means tons of air in the beginning of your draw. Sounds like maybe you've just naturally adjusted how hard you're pulling.
