Stupid question but is the name "eGo" is it...

The name of an entire group/class of devices that look alike?

A brand name like Kleenex that has been appropriated by other manufacturers or is used by the community as a genetic name for a group of devices that look alike despite it actually being the name of a particular line by a particular company?

Or
Is only the name of a particular line manufactured by joyetech & should only be used as such?

Or something else all together?

Like should a device be labeled an "eGo" if its not made by joyetech?

Thanks for your help with this because its certainly confusing me...

I think you nailed it pretty well. Intellectual property rights are not enforced in China. So, if you design a good product it quickly becomes the standard everyone copies.

I copy/pasted this from e-cigarette wiki:

The Joye eGo is a type of PV that resembles a pen.
It was originally produced by Shenzhen Joye Technology, but has now been copied by others.

EGO refers to a name brand which has been adopted by the ecig world as a reference. EGO is a brand - one of the first and is probably the most saturated one on the market. Mostly the use of the name or reference is to the size of the connector which has a two part connector - female - 7mm x .5 thread and an male connector - 12mm x .5 thread. I totally understand the confusion - the world of vaping can be daunting at first - lots of new words/ phrases.
My reccomendation would be to stick with some of the larger name brands - Joytech, Vision, Kanger - just to name a few. The best bet is to start with what ever brand your local vape shop carries; in order to have some piece of mind in case of repair/ replacement in a hurry.

Wasn't the eGo name first used by Janty in 2009?
I remember Janty was designing new models with Joyetech all the time (when no-one in the western world had even heard of Joyetech). Later on, Joyetech started marketing their own products but back in the early days they didn't.

Joyetech did not design the EGO Janty did that.
I know. But they did most of the designing, technical drawing and production at the Joyetech facilities in Shenzhen. I think I may even have an old video which Ludo sent me at the time they were working on it.
All of the Janty models were designed by Janty and produced at the Joyetech facilities back then.
