How long does the "new wick taste" last?

Should I torch it with an actual torch lighter or just a regular lighter? And is it ok if it looks blackened?
You can also rinse the whole device with hot distilled or filtered water to get out the chemically taste, blot dry with a clean paper towel then do a dry burn of the coil. I usually do this with new silica wicks. I would personally avoid the torch unless you got some of the German Silica.
As far as juice getting in your mouth type deals, that can happen if the condensation builds up in the drip tip/top cap. As you're puffing just keep sucking a few seconds after you let off the button to clear out all the vapor. You can also end up with a spitting coil if it's not wrapped tightly enough, but be careful to not wrap too tight or you'll choke the wick and it'll go dry all the time.
I've had the best results on my IGO-L with silica using German 3mm doubled at the coil, insert a large safety pin while wrapping firmly then pull the safety pin out when I screw it onto the dripper. That gives the silica enough room to breath but the coil stays tight enough to not spit as much.

Sounds like a cheap silica wick....ya, you gotta torch the cheap stuff first.
Buy xc-116 ceramic wick (its KILN TREATED and hollow)..... its not cheap but its ready to use as is, great taste better then boiled cotton or SS mesh
its $7 a foot at Big Tex Vapor.......its very durable stuff.
I get mine from clouds of vapor, it is the gg silica. I might be overkill but I cut my wicks, then boil for 10 minutes, dump the water and boil again for 10 minutes. I let them sit out to air dry overnight and then put them in my tin case. When I am ready to build I torch the wick first before coiling, also I hit the kanthal wire with a bic lighter to heat it up.
I don't really have any break in time with doing the above. And since everything is prepared ahead of time, wicks preboiled and waiting as well as wires prefused and waiting, it doesn't take long to build the coil.

I really, really wanna try some of this wick, but it's sooo expensive! Does it last a lot longer than the silica before you have to change it out?

Be careful with this - in order for it not to break down (resulting in fibers of virtually indestructible material ending up in your lungs kinda like asbestos), it needs to be heat treated (at about 750 degrees CELCIUS). Unless you have access to a high temperature kiln, you're better off buying the stuff that's already heat treated. I have read about some folks heat treating it with a map gas torch. YMMV.
i was told the braided wick at rtdvapor is german, it is braided and matches all the pics i find on german forums, never contacted them about it though. it will fray easy so it needs to be looped, but i find the taste far above standard shoelace type silica and love it. its in all my drippers and kayfun too.
I was informed by another person on a FB group that the good stuff is Russian not German
