I don't follow expiration dates too closely on anything. What I would do in a case like this though is pour or somehow put the liquid in another container (preferably glass) and then cut the first container open and examine the inside. This is assuming the original container is plastic. If it's glass, it may be just the juice that may be a bit funky. If everything seems OK, give it a shot (a small shot!)

If the liquid is cloudy or turned dark brown then it's probably not any good. PG turns cloudy as it goes bad, nicotine and flavorings gradually turn brown and change to a sort of sludge like mixture. But if it's still clear, viscus, and normal colored it should be just fine.

PG and nicotine base has a shelf life of about 2 years if kept in the dark at room temperature. Vegetable glycerin has a shelf life of 4-6 years. The shelf life of flavorings can vary wildly depending on the flavoring and what it's mixed in. Most alcohol flavorings can last 3-4 years, PG based flavorings 1-2 years. Artificial flavors will last longer than natural flavors.

For me, most juices dont taste as good after 4 months or so. There are exceptions like Kizmet by Steam factory which is delectable at about 6 months. But something like Banana Leche from Beantown is horrid at 6months. Same with Derailed and Mothermilk. And I like my Nico stuff FOOB.

    Agreed.

Just happens to find a bottle of E-liquid at home, made in 2013 expiring this Aug 2015

is it still safe to use the E-liquid?

It is safe to use. It will however be really well steeped ;). That means the flavor will have changed through the steeping (aging) process about as much as it can possibly change. When people steep a juice they typically let it age for between days to months. You might like the flavor change or not, but a lot of people like it with many different juices.

As long as the juice has no organic ingredients in it it's good for at least 2 years and probably a lot longer. Both VG and PG have antimicrobial properties, so not much will 'grow' in there. I would try it and see how it goes.

The nic liq actually begins turning a caramel color on its way to brown as soon as it's mixed. Any juice will darken a little bit as it sits. I can tell when a batch of my fave juice from my b&m was mixed by the color. Most are clear up to 5 days, then caramel at 2 weeks. By 2 months they start to look a little dark and they do a clearance sale. They put a born on date on their house mixes. That's is how I figured it out. I've seen the same thing in my DIY mixes. Only been mixing my own about a month now, but a batch I mixed up my first week has definitely darkened a shade or 2.

Is like wine. Stable environment for storage help preservation. But neither wine nor liquids are chemically inert. Some vintages tilt over into vinegar after just a few years, a few select can last - and improve with age. That's always va banque play it wine auctions. You could end up with the most expensive vinegar or some very exquisite experience for your palate.
So your liquid could be something along these lines too: either a well-aged perfectly balanced blend or some foul conoction out of a witch's cauldron...

But one misconception is that exactly one day after the 'use by' date, the contents of any container thus labeled transmutes from consumable into a deadly toxin ---

My wife uses a dark tobacco liquid. It really needs about 2 months steeping just to become good and is still good (maybe better) after a year. Never let any go much longer than that.

I use unflavored liquid. I have kept my nic/pg base in the freezer for nearly 2 years with no problems.

I think it will really depend on the flavor and how it has been stored. I doubt that it is in anyway toxic, just might taste bad. You never know 'till you try it.

I've used 2 year old juice and it tasted delicious.
They say average shelf life is 2 years, but i bet it's more then that. Granted it's been keept in the dark.

I've nickoticket juices that's been steeped for 1 year, and it's better than ever. So i wouldn't worry to much. Unless the juice smells / tastes foul or has grumly goo in it.

Yesterday i vaped this juice "Expired 2013-09-12" Didn't smell foul or anything and vaped just fine. :)

If its more than 3-4 years then maybe i would take abit of precaution. :)

    Hello dear,

Once I noticed separation of ingredients in my e-liquid mixture. Even when shaking the bottle well, the ingredients were within the same condition and failed to combine. i assume this a sign that the liquid might have expired:(. Also, i believe overtime the juice can look thicker and can lose its brightness. currently I like shopping for in less amount per order.
