I ran my first full tank and then refilled it and it started to taste kinda burnt. Is that usually how they need to be refreshed, 1 tank? I ask because it seems a bit quick and when I took the first few hits of second tank I got dry hits so thinking I could have burnt the cotton a bit and thats why. The first full tank was unreal, now I see why everyone loves this device. So anyway let me know how many tanks you generally can get out of fresh organic cotton wick, and approx what your coil specs are. Thanks

I'm changing the cotton every time I'm switching juices. If its the same juice, I would just leave the cotton and only change when the cotton looks funky (around 2-3 refills, pending on juice).

Working with micro coil - 26 awg, 5/64

I've struggled with dry hits when I was doing the first rebuild. I've found that wetting the cotton with juice while wicking and pushing it against the side of the +- post wall (to ensure the air channel is not blocked) works pretty well for me. I've also learnt less cotton equals better wicking :p
I'm getting flavourful vapes within the first 3 draws.

Try messing around with the air hole too. Before, the draw was warm and a slight taste taste. After removing the screw on the air control valve, the draw was airy, cool and no burnt after taste.

It takes a few rebuilds to find out what works for you. Took me 2 rebuilds and probably 8ml wasted before I got the kind of vape that got me hooked on RBAs.

I've been having trouble lately with a sudden burned taste on my Russian 91%. Works fine one minute, next puff is awful. I was using a tiny little amount of cotton. Happened this morning a little while after I refilled (after vaping a tankful on a new wick). I emptied it out and the wick has a very small dark spot on it, doesn't look that bad and doesn't smell burned. It's starting to annoy me, like I can't predict when it's going to happen, although it almost always happens when I'm out and about.

Today I built a new 2.5 ohm (higher than I wanted) microcoil with 30 gauge wire and, instead of cotton, I stripped one strand out of a piece of peaches n creme yarn to see if that would make any difference. I also put the standard drip tip back on, which seems to seal better (I don't think I had this burned taste problem until after I started using my own drip tips...maybe it's a vacuum thing?)

One wick lasts 5-10 tanks for me depending on which e-liquid I am using. I go through 10-15 ml of e-liquid a day.

Currently using a 3/32 contact coil, 5/4 wrap @ 1.1 ohms. I previously used 1/16 and 5/64 contact coils, but the smaller coils seem to require more frequent re-wicking and also have trouble with 100% VG. The 3/32 coil runs any mix of PG/VG without problems and the wicks seem to last longer.

I do not subscribe to the "less is more" idea in regards to cotton wick... I believe there is a CORRECT amount of cotton for any given coil size, and using too much or too little cotton will have negative effects on wick life and vape quality.

HMMM something tells me this might be the cause of my "slight" burnt taste LOL. I'm guessing this is just super gunker juice cuz thats 1 tank with a 1.2 ohm micro coil at 8 watts.

I'm newbie when it comes to KayFuns 2 weeks or so. My experience has been every 2 tanks and I vape High VG bases or VG/DW blends. Usually the coil is pretty gunked up at that point and I do it for the Dry burn. Has any one done a Mesh build covered with cotton or ecko wool build in the Kayfun? will it work? I usually take my Genny type tanks and torch the Mesh and coil with my pocket torch when it get gunked up seems to work well and Mesh lasts a long time.

That's a messy piece of cotton! Lol try that one again and post a pic of your wicking setup before you assemble please

I would try a different wicking material if this keeps happening like ecowool maybe

Ahhh I read this after rewicking and filling. Its hitting like kayfun perfection just like before, I think this juice is just super gnarly on cotton/coils. I also hadnt received my organic cotton when I made that one so this one is organic. The way I wick is just enough lightly pinched cotton to make contact with id of coil then put both ends upwards to put the threaded ring onto base, then cut cotton about 1/4 inch above it once its threaded down. After that I push the cotton down gently onto the base on each side and then use a tiny jewelers screwdriver to push it against the +- posts to nicely expose the juice slot on each side. For me it works great for 1 tank but I think normal juices will allow a few tanks before having to refresh. As far as Kayfun goes, I now see what all the hype is about. This thing is a game changer for me. The ability, and ease of building, and the fact that its a tank but tastes incredible. The only slight complaint I have is the draw is a bit tighter than I'd prefer even when airhole maxed out but I also think thats partially a symptom of being pretty fresh off strong ciggs and still needing a large amount of nicotine to satisfy me. I'm told by many eventually that will sort of level out and I'll start to enjoy lower nic juices. We shall see, but man how funny was that coil, I about died laughing when I revealed that. Thanks guys!!

That's my method of wicking also. My coils are 28 gauge micros wrapped on a 1/16 drill bit at 1.3 ohms and I wick with cheese cloth. My juices are coil gunkers so I usually change wicks every tank, although I could probably go a couple of tanks if I tried.

I'm not sure if my set up would wick through a complete tank with no dry hits or not, but I think it would. The reason I don't know is because I have a habit of turning it upside down and back up every 3 or 4 puffs. That keeps the wick fully saturated just like dripping or squonking.

I've never tried organic cotton, but I've seen some posts saying it can have a slight cotton taste that has a break in period. The cheese cloth that I use has a very slight cotton taste that disappears in a few puffs. Some of the hard core guys in the 'micro coils' thread are recommending the Koh Gen Do cotton pads. I plan on giving those a try when I get around to it.

Makes me glad I DIY.
I am at 10 tanks on one KayFun, 6 on another, 4 on a Rocket after a flavor change and 3 on the second Rocket after a Flavor change. Only reason I have replaced any so far is due to flavor changes.

2-3 Nano kit KF's worth of Mass and it looks like a BBQ grill on the coil. I have to dry burn the coil and blow on it real hard so the baked on shiz comes off. Most times I have to clip the wick so I can remove it. Then I light it up real hot, let go of the button and put it straight under a barely running faucet. I do that about 2-3 times and it's good to go.

28G .063" ID kanthal. cotton.

This coil has been going for... hmm... 160-180ml? I've been thru 3 30ml's a 60ml bottle, and I'm halfway thru a 120ml...

Not all used in the KF. But most has.

I just tried silica instead and it didn't last as well as the cotton. I actually can't wait to get home to rewick it. 2 tanks. Maybe 6ml. And it tastes like 3 on cotton.
