What resistance are you looking for? With 28awg Kanthal, it's going to be hard to get anything over 1.5Ω. You'll need about 7-8 wraps to achieve that. The lower the awg, the thicker the wire and less resistance you'll have. Most folks that buy 28awg are trying to achieve very low resistance coils.
What atty are you using and what ohm's are you trying to achieve?

This is very true. I watched riptippers youtube video on 28awg, and he uses a 7-8 wrap, well on the follow-up video. The first one I think he did a 4-5 rap, and got .7 ohms.

That is possible. I may have made the coil just a hair too loose. On the other hand that horrible taste has greatly diminished. Also the wick seems to be wicking just fine. Lucky me considering my first actual working coil. I made the wick then used one size larger of a drill bit to make my coil so all I had to do was slide it over the wick. Went on pretty easily.

more mesh
rolling a solid, thick wick will wick better

I actually rolled a solid 70mm #400 wick and rolled about a 50mm #400 around a small paperclip. I found that I got more dry hits with the 400 rolled solid compared to the wick with a center hole.

As for #500 I've read the solid wick will wick better, but I'm still waiting to get my #500.. So no experience with that yet.

For the most part, people over analyze all this genesis stuff. If it's not wicking, make sure you have the fill screw out. They just don't wick well with it in (no matter what people tell you). I've used mesh from 325 to 635 in solid and "tube" configurations and I'll be damned if I can tell that one works better then the other. As far as a metallic taste, that is usually from a short or micro short, a loose coil or the top leg going to the positive post being too far from the post. Make sure the top coil is close to the post but not touching, then poke the coils during a dry burn to make sure all the coils not only glow evenly, but heat up at the same pace.
