How to use a Voltage Meter?

Hi,

I just found this voltage meter at my dad's house. Amazon.com: Greenlee DM-20 Manual Ranging Digital Multimeter With Test Lead: Home Improvement Can anyone teach me how I can check batteries with it? Sorry I'm a total newbie to this. I need a lesson in voltage meter for dummies.

Thanks so much, that was really helpful. Dunno if there something wrong w/ me. I chk atty resistant, they were fine. I chk 14500 batteries get a 4.4. I try to test my eGo battery still shows a 0.00. I'm using that one to vape, so I'm sure that one is working. So the red on the center post and the black on the thread right? Not sure what I'm doing wrong but my eGo batteries shows a 0.00

Just FYI, eGo batteries self regulate at ~3.2-3.4v so raw, unloaded voltage reading will not tell you much. You have to test your batteries under load, and that's not a simple procedure.

If your meter is correct that's way too high for a Li-Ion cell.
