I've only been vaping for about a week, after being an occasional smoker (pack a week if that) for about a year. I've noticed that while I can pick up a cigarette first thing in the morning and smoke it fine, it takes quite a few drags before I stop getting throat pain/coughing while vaping. I'm sure there are different techniques required, so what tips do you have for me?

I'm new to this myself too so by no means any expert! But regarding the throat pain etc could it be the flavour and/or nicotine strength? I'm not sure if nicotine strength would have anything to do with it, I'm using a low strength because I wasn't a heavy smoker although more than yourself at around ten a day. I've noticed though that with the first menthol I tried it wasn't harsh at all, the second menthol I tried was nice but a little harsh on the throat. Only problem with that is I did actually have a sore throat to begin with anyway when I chose to quit and use the ecig. No doubt that excacerbated things. But there is a noticeable difference in harshness between the two. I would suggest trying a milder flavour. It doesn't seem to make a difference to myself at least, if I use it more or less or puff more on it at any one 'session' than another. I tend to treat it as I would have done tobacco, so kids permitting I might have only five minutes out here puffing away or when everyone's settled I might have a half hour. Normally if I had that long I might have had two or three roll ups in that time. Sounds terrible I know, but I don't get a huge amount of time out here so I'd fit what I could in!
What flavour are you using?

Try different ways, is all I can say.

Some folks smoke by drawing it straight to their lungs, then want to vape that way and have issues. When I smoked I was never able to do that, so I already had a good technique when I switched. The consensus is to vape properly, draw into the mouth, hold it there, then inhale, and exhale slowly through the nose. The vapor particles are much larger than smoke particles, with vaping the nicotine exchange is mostly through the tissues in the mouth and nose than in the lungs.

But everyone's different. Advanced users who chase clouds are kind of stuck with direct lung drawing because of the volume of air they have to work with. As in all things vaping, try everything and settle into what works for you.

Honestly it's just something you'll get used to.

Smoking and vaping are two very different things. Your body will get used to the vapor, just like it got used to smoke.

I recently introduced an acquaintance of mine to vaping. She was a long time smoker, 30+ years, and any time she would try my vaping gear, it would make her cough hard. But she finally buckled down and quit the analogs and went to vaping instead. It took her a few days to get over the cough, but when she did she was ecstatic about finally being off the analogs.

Just give it time. The cough will ease up as your body adjusts.

Moin,

you vape different then smoking (on most devices *):

First draw should be long and soft, while cigarettes require short and hard and deep draw.
Next you will vape the first one or two puffs on cheeks. Dont inhale, just puff out of mouth.
Last there is no reason to vape into lung. The lung does not have any nerves for taste. But instead exhale the last big puff though the nose.

Ask someone who smoked a pipe or cigar. This is similar to vaping. The goal should be to convert yourself from an addicted nicotine smoker to a flavour greedy vaper. And yes, the throat has to adept to vaping. Normal cigarettes contain lots of additives to suppress the throat cough. E-liquids do not contain those additives. In addition PG will dry out mouth and throat. So drink a lot.

ciao,Michael

(*) Most beginners devices have a tight draw, and require slow and long vaping, e.g. EVOD, Vivi Nova Mini, Boge 510, mini Protank 2. The only exception of the devices I own is the Cisco 306 that actually works better with a cigarette like short and hard draw.

I'm over 3 months into vaping and I still get a cough the first few puffs in the morning. When I first started, any time I vaped, I coughed. I visited a local B & M and the young lady there told me that she has been vaping for over 3 yrs. and still coughs first thing in the morning. She got me a 100% VG juice that got me over the hump of being able to vape at all, but even with the pure VG, I still coughed in the morning. Once my lungs clear out the phlegm, I can vape cough free. Hang in there, it gets better!!

I'm new to vaping also, the link to inhalation techniques already posted helped me a lot and I watched quite a few YouTube videos, mostly reviews and stuff, and that let me see others doing it so I tried to copy their technique. I'm still getting the hang of it myself, but it seems to be getting better. My first vape, and last analog, was Thursday, January 9 @ 9am, so I'm definitely still learning, but I'm so happy that I've switched. We just have to stick with it and with all of the helpful people on here, I know it will get easier! :D

Congratulations. I've been trying to get off analogs since October 26. I was doing really good until holiday stress and a pair of deaths came. Time to get back on the wagon. I've recommitted to staying away from them.
