OMG are these BEAUTIFUL. But to spend $500, $1000, and even $4,000 just to tear it apart to make a PV would be insane.

i saw a lightsaber mod thread somewhere in here. might want to take a look at that instead.

I know they kinda look like those replica lightsabers, but these are high end lasers... the kind that actually burn, not just illuminate.

That's where the expense comes from. If they sold just the body, sans actual laser components, I'd bet you could get one for about $100 or so. The cost is in the technology of the laser.

I'd get this one if they still allowed US orders... but then again, I can have it bounced to me from somewhere else. hmmmm

One more reason I'm really starting to hate this F*&^ing country.... Banning lasers come on people I swear people need to stick up to our ...... government this is getting ridiculous.....
One more reason I'll eventually just move.... This is not the same place I was born in and its really starting to SUCK
Stop acting like you are missing out. The US is just catching up with countries like Australia, Britain, places like that. I do agree though, it sucks.

I really want to buy a stronger than 5mW- but I understand that anything above 5mW is illegal in the States correct? Im pretty sure I know of a few suppliers in China that will send to me anyways- but how likely is it that customs will catch those high-power lasers?
It was my understanding that you just can't buy them, but you can own them. You can also buy (again, in my limited understanding of this topic) the parts and build one of your own that is greater than 5mW. As I said, though, this isn't an area where I have a great deal of knowledge, and I could well be wrong about that.

i think your right- I meant its illegal to have one shipped to you in the US- I don't think illegal is the best word- but technically customs will not allow any laser over 5mW to be imported- those lasers are probably 200mW maybe a lot higher- my knowledge in lasers is pretty limited also- but I wonder if they would catch a high power laser coming in to the US- or how often they catch them?

I don't really understand why they're illegal,
I believe it's because at 5mW or lower, the human blink response happens before the laser can cause damage. Higher than that, they can do damage before your body can react to the light.

but why in the world would anybody pay $4000 for one?
Lots of gadget freaks have a high disposable income.

You're wrong there! 5mW is an incredibly low power to have it limited at!

I run a mobile disco company and even the basic lasers are far, far higher rated than that!

Here you go: Laserworld PL 1200 RGB Was 10 999 00 Now 8 999 00 ... not a mobile disco laser - more for install situations, but it's the first one I found.... rated at 1200mW :D

You dont like this dictorship? Sheesh, I just love when the government starts babysitting my life. I always wanted to visit "Old Russia" LOL I guess I will stay here in the USA and just wait and save myself an expensive plane ticket cause were getting there eventually. So sad...our Founding Fathers are screaming from the other side "NOOOO, THATS NOT WHAT WE MEANT!!" I love America but its decline is steady and it scares the H&ll out of me.
