Howdy folks,

I just joined the site. I am a Texican who is working in China. I gave up cigs for e cigs. My lung function has improved and I feel much better.

I started vaping in the US last year. The e cigs were a Christmas gift from my wife and daughter.

I'm glad to be here and look forward to reading past posts to increase my knowledge. I will try not to ask too many stupid questions.:)

Welcome to ECF Old Grouchy! Hope things are going well for you in China.

Good for you on tossing cigs to the curb and to your family for helping you out. I smoked for 37 years and vaping really helped me quit.

I'm also interested to know more about the vape scene in China. I have the feeling it's not that usual or accepted there too. I would imagine it also depends on what part of China we're talking about.

Don't worry about stupid questions. I asked most of them when I first started here so there aren't that many left ;)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

bacc.vap in answer to your question about Chinese people vaping, The Chinese don't know what vaping is. I have never seen another person in China vaping.

Yes, you would think more Chinese would vape since I am told the e cig was invented by a Chinese gentleman and they manufacture all the ecigs.

I think the major driver is cost. Chinese people are very frugal by nature. Cigarettes over here cost from 7 RMB a pack (slightly more than 1 USD) all the way up to 155 RMB (almost 25 USD) a pack for Chung Hwa. BTW only the rich people in smoke the Chung Hwa as a status symbol.

Most people smoke the mid range cigarettes (18-24 RMB a pack or $2.88 - $3.85 a pack). Like 'double happiness" which is like a Chinese marlboro.

The Chinese will not pay extra to vape. Also in Mainland China you can smoke cigarettes anywhere except for a dept store and on the bus in a cab, or a plane. So there is no convenience factor driving anyone to vape.

But it works out good for me. I had to go to Hong Kong from China last month. I vaped in the cab, on the train, and even standing in line at immigration in China and Hong Kong to get my passport stamped. I have vaped on Chinese planes (be discreet). They don't know what e cigs are.

I know that isn't proper etiquette and I would never do that in the US, but not 1 person has ever complained about me vaping in China. Not once, ever, anywhere. Even if only 1 person complained I would never vape again in an area that cigarettes are not allowed in. But so far, zero, zip, nada, the null set, Not 1 person has ever complained.

Hong Kong however is very strict about smoking. The fine is a maximum of 5000 HKD (Hong Kong Dollars). . The only place you can smoke in Hong Kong is outside, or in your own home. Except for parks, they don't let you smoke in Parks in Hong Kong. I have never seen anyone in Hong Kong vaping either. You would think due to the stricter laws people would be vaping all the time in Hong Kong just for the convenience factor.

I am told they are illegal in Hong Kong. It won't let me post links but please use your "google fu and" check out "Hong Kong outlaws e cigs."

But I stood right next to 2 hong kong policemen , indoors vaping away. They (the general population) don't know what they are. I think they thought I was chewing on a pen. They didn't seem to notice or smell the vapor either. :) Go figure!

Hi, grouchy old guy. Ask away I don't want to be the only one here asking stupid questions. The info on China was very interesting.
Congratulations on quitting. I was a 50 year pack day smoker. But now every time I want a cigarette I just vape away and I am content and very happy. Welcome To the forum from one newcomer to another. :)

I am in HK, and although the laws are somewhat draconian on paper, in reality I have seen quite a few people vaping in bars and on the streets. A touch of discretion and I don't really think it is a problem. Although I concur with the OP that the it is not the Chinese who are vaping - more the expats. Smoking analogues is a way of life in China, unlike in the west.
