No don't use a foreign object to pierce the Chad. Many people who do this bugger up the hole and make the tank leak just insert a new tank into the atty and push it will then make the perfect hole.

Seriously, just use a sharp round object, smaller diameter than the spike, to initially puncture the center of the chad. Then insert the tank and let the spike finish the job. This prevents all that pressure on the spike/plate and works just fine for me. Plus you don't have to worry about pushing the wick down into the spike.
