Hi and welcome! I've only been vaping for about 8 months total, 6 months off the cigarettes, I love it and I don't plan to ever go back.
So, you never answered about whether you prefer mouth-to-lung (MTL) or direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping style. MTL is like a cigarette, you draw the vapor into your mouth, then inhale, DTL is where you inhale the vapor directly into your lungs without holding it in your mouth first.
I went straight to the direct-to-lung style. It's a lot more fun for me, as I can blow mad clowdz and get great taste, as well!

I agree with you, the vaping world can seem intimidating at first, but the great thing is that there is something for everyone, at all levels of experience, and forums like this are full of helpful friendly people who want nothing more than to assist us in staying off the cigarettes.
Also, I've found that online vape stores are also a great resource, in addition to local shops. You can check out the descriptions and reviews and get tons of feedback about a product before you buy. Elementvape and VaporDNA are two online sellers that I've had good experiences with.
Youtube is also a great resource for us beginners. You can find a review of pretty much any vape equipment out there.
As far as mod recommendations, again, I'm still pretty new to this, but I progress pretty fast. I currently have 3 mods: Innokin Kroma-A, Eleaf Tessera, and the Voopoo Drag. I also have 4 tanks: The Cleito Exo, the Uwell Crown III, the Uwell Valyrian, and the Horizontech Falcon Resin Artisan edition.
My favorite mod out of all 3 is the Voopoo Drag. Love the look and feel, it's an all-metal mod that is very sturdy and seems like it will last a long time. It also has the benefit of being my first mod that has dual removable 18650 batteries. This is a plus for me, as both of my other mods have internal batteries that cannot be removed, so once the batteries wear out, the mod is useless. The Kroma-A and Tessera are both great mods, don't get me wrong, but the Drag has longer battery life and the Gene chip is super-responsive and comes with a Windows app for your PC that you can use to customize everything right up to the boot-up screen. Screen is also very bright and clear. All 3 mods are pretty portable, the drag is the largest and heaviest of the bunch but it still fits in my pocket well.
It all really comes down to what you want...I wanted something durable, with good battery life, that can still fit comfortably in my pocket. All 3 mods fit those criteria, with the Drag being the best of the bunch, in my opinion.
I liked all of the tanks I listed except the Valyrian. I just didn't like the taste and the draw was way too airy for me. The Cleito is more suited for MTL style, as it has a restricted, non-adjustable airflow. Flavor is very good, though.
As far as coils, each material has it's own merits. I've vaped stainless steel, and kanthal, in both standard and mesh coil systems. Both have really good flavor, but I have to give the edge to kanthal. Currently I'm using the Falcon tank which comes with mesh-style coils and the cotton is actually a woodpulp/cotton blend. Flavor is outstanding, I'm at a week and a half with the M1 single mesh coil (the tank kit also comes with a triple-mesh coil), and it still vapes great! Average lifespan of a coil depends on your vaping style, but for me, it seems to be 1-2 weeks.
Here is a pick of the Tessera with the Crown III tank and my Drag with the Falcon tank...
If you do decide to go with a mod with removable batteries, there are a lot of battery options out there. Be sure to check out mooch's blog for tons of info. I have two pairs of what is called 18650 batteries, Sony VTC5a and HohmLife. Both work great, I get two full days of vaping out of each.
All this is just my opinion based on my experience, ultimately, you have to find what works for you. Just try not to get intimidated and make the journey fun!
Anyway, hope this helps some, enjoy the ride and good luck!
