On the I-5 in Burbank, during my commute....

a Ford gt40.....smashed into pieces, it rear ended a big rig.
No injuries, I think, except the poor the car was doa and shattered, bleeding out on the side of the freeway. As far as I could tell (And knowing the area clientel) this was an original 66-68 street legal gt40 at that.

RIP original gt40 (im a chevy guy but damn a nice car is a nice car, no matter what colors we fly under)

(almost exactly like this one, but red, sorry I couldn't take pictures while driving heh)

Anybody else have any similar automotive classic/collector death storys to tell? This is the second case that almost brought tears to my eyes (Yes I care about the people also, but if they're ok then its manly tears time for the cars!)

I got pictures of it somewhere in the house but would have to go looking.
The picture here is close: ours was gold with a black top and strip. RW (DH) loved this car. One day I was at the mall and some lady rammed into the side, so hard the frame was bent.

Other hardware if it’s still usable.

That is a very sad story. I have been known to come close to tears when a beautiful car meets its end in a movie. Car people understand when Elwood takes off his hat when the "Blues Mobile" died. It is heart-wrenching and poignant. We had a Blues Mobile back in the 80s. It was the interceptor model of Elwood's car - cop shocks, cops struts, bullet proof everything, more power than anything car should have, and could pass everything on the road except a gas station. It died a violent death. During a NE Ohio ice storm, it spun around hitting everything and was totaled on all four sides.

We become emotionally attached to certain cars. Not only are they things of beauty, they take us places, help us get through life, and they were what got you to that "special place" you remember so fondly. A first car is not unlike a first love. It will always have a special place in our hearts.

I assume we are all fans of BBC's Top Gear? Those guys are great. I'm not so much of a muscle car fan, though. I'm a girl - I like the cute little European sports cars. One of these days I want to have the whole "Maxwell Smart" Thus far, I've only had an Opel GT, and it wasn't really mine, it was my dad's, but I remember it fondly.

Some of the worst crashes I have ever seen have been on the 5. I avoid that freeway when ever possible. Not that the 405 or the 91 are much better. I just hate the 5.

This was northern burbank also, so right before it hits the 118 I think, where it rapidly narrows to 3 or 4 lanes....

Also a few months ago I spotted a WONDERFUL 100% restored 71 240z, sparkling and looking like it was literally driven off the showroom floor....

It was promptly nailed and the front of the car bent over as it got on the freeway (210). No injuries, except the poor car :( The front end damage was horrible, just about bent the hood off the hinges and tore out the front axle completely.
