I've been having quite a time with ordering eliquids. I wanted to go with VG, but it seems to leave a foul aftertaste for me. eliquids from two of the super popular places were so sweet in an artificial sweetener kind of way that they disgusted me, and being VG based, they left the aftertaste, too. So far, the only eliquids I've found that I really like are PG and made in China, and that latter part opens up a whole new round of complaints.

In many of the threads here, people are discussing adding sweetness to their blends. Can I assume, then, that I won't be getting that artificial sweetener taste in homemade juice just from adding flavorings? Is adding additional sweetness necessary to most people, or is strictly a personal preference kind of thing?

Thanks for any answers, and for all the wonderful information that already exists in this forum.

I think it depends on individual tastes, we all taste things differently and some people like things sweeter then others. I can not help you much I am a novice dabbler so still feeling around in the dark myself. I hear VG adds sweetness to juice, which does not surprise me because it is very sickeningly sweet on its own, So some of your problem with the vg juice might be its natural sweetness. I have never tried a strict vg juice and when I do make it myself I use a 50/50 mix just because it is easy for me...LOL

I should shut up now and let some one who knows what the heck they are talking about to answer your questions....

LOL I haven't tried this at all yet, so you're a step ahead of me. :)

I originally attributed the artificial sweetener flavor to the VG, but then I realized that two of my 100% VG eliquids didn't have that--they just left an aftertaste. And I did notice on one of the other bottles that it "may contain" ethyl malitol (?? I'm not sure I'm spelling that correctly) and/or other additives that I'm clueless about.

I do know that I can handle a little VG in a blend, but I don't know exactly how much yet.

Ahh the ethyl malitol would make it sweeter by what I read... I would start out trying a 50/50 mix (hehe it is the easiest to come up with...LOL) of vg/pg adjust according to the after taste.. oh and old vg has a horrid after taste, totally nasty so yes it does go bad, one of my first attempts was with a bottle of vg I bought a couple years ago for cosmetic stuff... nasty nasty nasty...

I wish you luck on your journey to become a mad chemist :) I don't mix nearly enough (because I am really cheap and hate spending money so it is hard to mix with no ingredients...lol) but it is fun being the mad scientist and coming up with strange and fascinating creations, ok new flavors of liquid or what ever...LOL

Thanks! Actually, I think I'm going to add as *little* VG as possible, perhaps none. I had originally wanted to use the VG, but that aftertaste killed any thoughts I had about it being "the more natural product." :D But I'm glad to know that *not* adding the sweeteners won't make my juice automatically taste like .... I haven't been able to get that sweet taste out of my atties yet, either.

At this point, I just want to mix a few mild flavors that I can vape all day without the flavor constantly interfering with what I'm drinking. I'm getting the feeling that that makes me a little different from a lot of the other vapers out there. :) And it won't hurt my feelings to be saving money, too.

Hi Jo, Welcome to DIY!
Most are here becasuse the either 1) Want to save money or 2) want to know what goes in their juce.
To answer a couple of your questions:
a) VG will add sweetness and mask the flavor of your mix.
b) It depends on the flavor you mix, some add sweetness to the mix like cotton candy ot marshamallow.
c) Adding sweetners like sucralose is a personal prefferance, most do not.
d) My personal mixes are based on 20/80 VG/PG premixes that I then cut the unflavored ejuice with. It add more vapor and does not mask the flavor IMHO.
e) Fruit flavors tend to be sweeter than say coffee or tobacco flavors.

I would recommend downloading my ejuice calculator v11, the download link is in my sig. Check out the additional mixing help page. Has alot of good information in it.

Any more questions just shoot away!
Dan

Its ok to be different then other... vapors :) some like mild some like strong, I think part of DIY is to come up with something you like, from what you have said about the liquid you have bought your tastes do not mesh with other peoples so yup time to try it on your own :) experimentation here you come...

and I would suggest listing to Dan here he seams to know a hole heck of a lot :)

Ok enough from the peanut gallery tonight :)

Thanks, Dan. I downloaded the calculator a few days ago--it was kind of you to put it up for everyone-- and I placed some orders last night. I've been making my own lotions and facial oils using essential oils for a while now, so I'm already used to determining percentages in terms of drops, so I mainly just need to translate that knowledge into making eliquids and understanding the new ingredients. And based on that, I should have known that I'd eventually end up here. ;-)
