If the guy is really a ........., might I suggest you just let him smoke. It might sound morbid but let the analogs kill him. Hell encourage him to smoke more. Then less douchebags in the world the better. Hell though those are the kind of people that for some reason seem to outlive the good people.

Hey you did a good turn. You cannot change others. They have to do it on their own. Maybe if you just keep being a good friend, be positive, and say how much better you feel, tastes and smells etc, he may come around.I agree with Amraann.
